Capela do Alto reveals its cultural history through specific places: the Santuário Mãe Peregrina stands at the former site of a church regarded as the starting point of the city’s history. In the central urban area, you’ll also find a cultural center with a photo exhibition, a grotto with a water spring, and a paved walking path around a lagoon. Tropeiro traditions, religious customs and local foods are also part of the municipality’s cultural identity.

City History and Culture in the Urban Area

The Santuário Mãe Peregrina is located at the former site of the Igreja Nossa Senhora das Dores. This church is described as the starting point of the city’s history. The Centro Cultural Municipal de Capela do Alto offers another way to explore local history. It is in the central urban area on Rua Coronel Guilherme Wincler, the section of the former Estrada São Paulo/Paraná that runs through the city.

The cultural center hosts exhibitions, courses, workshops and cultural activities, including guitar and film; individual program items may vary. The center also houses a permanent photo exhibition from the Memorial de Capela do Alto, documenting the history of the municipality. In this way, the urban area brings together a historical link to the city’s founding and a broader cultural offering.

The Centro de Eventos e Tradições João Mori Lopes, usually called CETECA, was created to preserve local cultural traditions and provide an event venue in Capela do Alto. The origins of the Fandango de Chilenas dos Irmãos Lara also point to Tropeiro history: the group formed in inns where passing Tropeiros stayed. They transported herds and goods from the south to the markets of Sorocaba.

Grotto, Religious Customs and a Walking Path

In an elevated part of the city is the Gruta of the Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Lourdes. It includes a grotto dedicated to the saint, with a water spring. The town’s festivities include an annual blessing of the waters there in February. If you want to plan your trip around this custom, check the specific festival dates.

Another religious trace is associated with the site of Cruz do Monge: until 1960, 14 crosses were used there for the Stations of the Cross during Lent. The distinction in timing is important: the crosses are part of a historical practice, while the blessing of the waters is described as a recurring February custom.

The Centro EcolĂłgico e CaminhĂłdromo offers a paved walking path. It is 1,200 meters long and runs around a lagoon. Its stated length provides a specific guide when choosing a walk; the cultural center and religious sites offer different points of interest.

Traditions and Nature in the Municipality

The Rota dos Tropeiros, associated with the SP 268, is also part of the municipality’s history. This road is popularly known as the old São Paulo–Paraná road; its route was historically used by Tropeiro caravans. Traditionally, in May, Capela do Alto is also an overnight stop for a group of riders bringing together representatives of the municipalities along the São Paulo Tropeiro Route.

In the IperĂłzinho neighborhood, the Igreja de Santo Antonio dos ImpossĂveis houses a historically significant Baroque depiction of Santo AntĂ´nio. To the best of current knowledge, it is the only known temple where the saint bears this title. The Trezena de Santo Antonio is a religious tradition in the municipality: it consists of thirteen consecutive Tuesday marches of approximately five kilometers from the city center to the church. Each march ends with a prayer. If you want to plan around a specific date, check the latest dates in advance.

Regional food culture is also tied to particular places and times. The Festa da Mandioca takes place annually, usually in September, in the community of Distrito do Porto. Visitors can try soups with beef ribs, sweet and savory cakes, Bom-bocados and generous portions of cassava; the offerings may vary from one edition to the next. Another local specialty is Pastel caipira: a handmade cornmeal pastry filled with ground meat, fresh herbs and green corn. Its origins date back to the 1930s. The blessing of the waters and the Festa da Mandioca therefore mark different times in the municipal calendar: February and usually September. For a specific trip, check the dates and offerings for that year’s festival.

The Floresta Nacional de Ipanema covers parts of the municipalities of Capela do Alto, Iperó and Araçoiaba da Serra. The protected area preserves native vegetation of the Atlantic Forest, particularly around Morro Araçoiaba. Admission provides access to a historic site, self-guided trails, the Trilha das Cigarras, a climbing area, the visitor center and the kiosk area. Check visitor conditions before your trip. This makes it possible to tailor a stay to your interests: city history and cultural sites sit alongside religious traditions and nature experiences throughout the municipality.
