Igreja Matriz de São João Batista brings Bocaina’s sacred art to life: the church houses 13 paintings by artist Benedito Calixto de Jesus. The church was built between 1907 and 1910; Calixto created the paintings in 1924 and 1925. This makes it possible to distinguish the dates of the building’s construction from those of the paintings.

Church Art and Local History

At the entrance to Bocaina stands the Portal de São João Batista. It features a sculpture of the city’s patron saint, framed by columns reminiscent of the entrances to the region’s old, prominent coffee farms. Above them are lanterns and artistic details with Neoclassical influences. The portal thus creates its own architectural accent alongside the church itself.

The Igreja Matriz also features stained-glass windows of Belgian origin; lead strips divide the windows. The paintings have been restored and are protected as heritage by the state of São Paulo. The church is located on Rua XV de Novembro, at Praça Pedro João Izar, in the Centro district of Bocaina. If you would like to visit the interior, check visiting arrangements in advance.

Local history extends beyond individual buildings: according to a municipal heritage official, around 250 mansions were built when Bocaina was still called Vila de São João. This approximate figure was cited in 2010 and adds a look at the city’s historic built heritage to the history of the church.

Squares, Garden Art, and Festival Traditions

Praça Pedro Izar is known across the region for the Festa da Fogueira. In this tradition, described as an expression of faith, worshippers walk over glowing embers. A church report from 2018 noted that the Festa de São João Batista had been held for 127 years at that time, and placed the “passagem da fogueira” on the night of the patron saint’s festival. If you are planning to travel for the festival, check the latest dates and schedule in advance.

The square gardens also feature different forms of topiary. A municipal walking tour described the gardens of Praça Rui Barbosa in 2014, with shrubs and grasses shaped into silhouettes, motifs, letters, and numbers. A 2008 report described the Jardim da Fama on Praça Santa Luzia: there, plants were clipped into figures of singers and motifs representing national and international events. The two descriptions emphasize different features—geometric signs and silhouettes in one case, figures and event motifs in the other.

The Biblioteca Municipal Emmanuel Guedes offers another cultural highlight. A 2014 report mentioned a comic-book room and a collection of more than 15,000 works. If you are planning a visit, check the current opening hours.

Nature and Activities in the Wider Region

The Rio Jacaré Pepira is used for water sports and adventure sports in the wider region. Monkeys, coatis, toucans, and mergansers are among the animals that can be seen along its banks; the river as a whole is said to have approximately 34 fish species. This nature and activity offering differs from Bocaina’s church and square culture, adding a regional highlight for travelers with other interests.

For planning purposes, it helps to distinguish between the different reasons to visit: church art, architectural history, and garden motifs are among Bocaina’s cultural highlights; the Festa da Fogueira requires travel planning based on current dates. Nature and adventure sports on the Rio Jacaré Pepira are a separate highlight in the wider region.
