Areias brings together religious architecture, municipal history, and specific dates spanning several centuries. The Matriz Senhora Sant´Ana reflects a long construction period; the Capela da Boa Morte e Senhor Bom Jesus takes you back to the mid-18th century. The Casa da Cultura, Hotel Solar Imperial, and Casa do Artesão add a range of different historical functions. When making your selection, it is therefore not only the number of sites that matters, but also whether you are more interested in sacred art, former public functions, or local handicrafts.

Churches and Architectural History

The Matriz Senhora Sant´Ana was built starting in 1792, completed in 1874, and renovated in 1890. Inside are depictions of Senhora Sant’Ana and São Miguel. The construction period and religious imagery offer two perspectives on the same church: its development over several decades and its visual world.

The Capela da Boa Morte e Senhor Bom Jesus dates from the mid-18th century and was captured in a drawing by Jean Baptiste Debret. The focus is different in comparison: the chapel takes us further back in time and is associated with Debret’s drawing, while the history of the Matriz can be traced through its construction and renovation dates. This places two different historical connections of religious buildings side by side.

The Casa da Cultura adds a perspective on Areias’ public history. The building was constructed in 1833 to house the municipal council and the public jail. The Casa da Cultura displays an extensive collection of historical records. Its former purpose and its collection give the site a different focus from the churches: municipal functions and historical records take center stage here.

Hotel Solar Imperial also has two clearly dated connections to local history. Capitão-mor Gabriel Serafim da Silva had it built in 1798; D. Pedro I stayed there on August 17, 1822. The building’s history and the documented overnight stay connect it with different moments in the early 19th century.

City Views and Other Local Connections

The Mirante da Revolução Constitucionalista de 1932 was inaugurated on September 10, 2021. Its inauguration date adds a more recent point in time to the architectural history of the older buildings.

The mirante in the Santa Clara neighborhood is considered a spot for photos and picnics; it offers a partial view of the city. If you plan to visit this mirante, check in advance whether a visit is possible.

A newspaper report from 1873 states that about 1,000 people took part in the Festa do Senhor Morto.

The main source of the Rio Paraitinga, also known as the Paraíba do Sul, adds a natural feature to the architectural history: it was georeferenced and registered in 2006. This connection differs from those of the churches, former public functions, and collections.

Handicrafts and Local Offerings

The Casa do Artesão was built in 1998 in the same colonial architectural style as earlier buildings, to market local handicrafts. The municipal description lists various sweets and cachaça among the offerings at the Casa do Artesão. Its architectural style, handicrafts, and the products mentioned give this site a different character from historical buildings associated mainly with religion, municipal functions, or individual events.

If you are organizing your interests in Areias, you have several possible focuses: the architectural history of the churches, the former public functions of the Casa da Cultura, historical connections such as the overnight stay at the Solar Imperial, or handicrafts. These differences can help you set your personal travel priorities without combining the sites into a fixed route.
