Americana brings together art and architectural history with a large botanical garden and waterside destinations with distinct characteristics.

Art, Railway History and Church Architecture

The collection at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Americana comprises 353 catalogued works of art that are protected as heritage. This number may change. Alongside its temporary exhibitions, the museum offers free courses, workshops, and talks with invited artists, historians, and specialists; its educational program may also change. If you plan to attend an event, check the relevant program.

Estação Cultura is housed in a railway station building that opened on August 27, 1875, under the name Estação Santa Bárbara. The institution houses visual arts, music, and cultural heritage spaces and contributes to making culture more accessible. The history of the station building and its cultural uses thus exist side by side.

Church architecture and history come together at the Basílica de Santo Antônio de Pádua. According to the municipal description, it is considered the largest church in the Diocese of Limeira and the largest Neoclassical church in Brazil. The decree establishing the basilica was signed by Pope Francis on May 30, 2014.

Botanical Garden and Waterside Destinations

The Jardim Botânico Municipal “Prefeito Carroll Meneghel” covers 100,000 square meters and has around 7,000 young plants of native and exotic tree species. The plant count is approximate. The garden’s area and tree collection give it a profile distinct from the art collection, station, and basilica; it is a separate focus for travelers who want to include botanical interests in their choices.

Praia Azul is located at kilometer 124 of the Rodovia Anhanguera. It is formed by water from the Rio Atibaia, which was dammed for the construction of the Salto Grande Dam. Praia dos Namorados offers a different emphasis: it is a recreational area with kiosks, bars, and snack bars, as well as a varied music program for families and visitors. The music program may change. The two destinations therefore have different features: Praia Azul is associated with the river and dam, while Praia dos Namorados offers the recreational facilities and music mentioned above.

Market and Visit Planning

In 2010, the Mercado Municipal was declared part of the sociocultural heritage of the municipality of Americana and renamed Mercado Municipal “Luiza Padovani.” Visitors can enjoy the traditional pastel there; individual vendors may change. The market thus combines a cultural and historical connection with a specific local food tradition.

For public visits to OMA, the visitor policy lists appointments on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, with advance booking required. Arrange your appointment in advance, as the policy may change. There are several different areas of focus to choose from when planning: art and architectural history, the botanical garden, the two waterside destinations with their distinct characteristics, or the market and its food tradition. You can choose which ones shape your stay according to your interests.
