Altinópolis combines sculptures and cultural sites with waterfalls, a sandstone cave and viewpoints. When choosing your accommodation, you can consider whether you want to focus on exploring cultural sites or on trails and waterscapes. Destinations range from a park that hosts fairs and exhibitions to natural sites where access and trail conditions need to be considered when planning.
Sculptures, Culture and History
The Jardim das Esculturas features 22 concrete sculptures by artist Bassano Vaccarini across an area of 700 m². They are arranged in groups designed as a tribute to women. Another cultural stop is Praça das Esculturas: it has been declared historically and culturally valuable to Altinópolis and placed under heritage protection. This is based on Municipal Law No. 2147 of November 19, 2021.
Industrial history is also part of the local story: Usina Esmeril is a hydroelectric power plant built by the English in 1913. Fairs and exhibitions are held at Parque Municipal de Santa Cruz. The park is located on Morro de Santa Cruz, which offers views of neighboring cities. Cultural events and viewpoints are two distinct aspects of the same place.
Another viewpoint is Morro da Serra, 17 km from the city center. From there, you can see the entire city. By contrast, the view from Morro de Santa Cruz takes in neighboring cities. The two described perspectives are therefore different, without assuming a particular walking route.
Waterfalls and the Itambé Complex
Cachoeira do Esmeril features an 80-meter-high waterfall and is located 300 meters from Usina Esmeril. Some of the water is diverted to operate the power plant. The Itambé Complex is a permanently protected conservation area, protected and maintained by the Tourism Department of the Altinópolis municipal government.
Gruta de Itambé is a cave formed in Botucatu sandstone. Its galleries are more than 400 meters long. A 400-meter walking trail leads to the cave; vehicle access is also restricted nearby, so a walk of about ten minutes is required. The road to Gruta includes about 10 km of paved road and 2 km of unpaved road. As road conditions and access rules can change, check the access route and current conditions before setting out.
Cachoeira do Itambé is 60 meters high and has a natural pool suitable for swimming. Swimming conditions may vary seasonally and operationally. Access is via gently sloping paths and small walkways with safety railings, and is classified as easy. Also check the condition of the trails before your visit, as infrastructure can change.
Trails and Visit Planning
The Itambé Complex visitor center has restrooms, environmental education spaces and a handicrafts market where artisans can display their work. Check that the facilities are available before your trip. The sites each have different highlights: in Altinópolis, you can combine sculptures, heritage protection and events with viewpoints, waterfalls and a cave.
