Some possible highlights of a trip to Urussanga include its significant historic architectural ensemble, Italian-influenced cuisine, and products made from the Goethe grape. You can shape your trip around different interests, from architectural and immigration history to wine and food culture and urban green space.

Historic Center and Italian Heritage

The Centro Histórico de Urussanga preserves a significant architectural ensemble associated with Italian immigration in the 19th and 20th centuries. A collection of historic buildings lies around Praça Anita Garibaldi in the historic town center. The two scales complement each other: the ensemble captures a cultural connection spanning a long period, while the square anchors it to a specific area of the town center.

Another building with this historic connection is Igreja São Gervásio e São Protásio in the municipality of Rio Maior, in Urussanga. It is a religious, historic, and cultural heritage site associated with Italian immigration. Italian immigrants from Erto and Casso built the church from sandstone in 1912. It was protected as historic heritage by the Fundação Catarinense de Cultura in 2001 and by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional in 2015. The dates refer to different things: 1912 is the year it was built, while 2001 and 2015 mark later heritage protections. This distinguishes the building’s origins from its subsequent recognition as heritage.

Cuisine and the Goethe Grape

Urussanga is known for its distinctive Italian cuisine. Wine, sparkling wine, and grape juice production are also part of the city’s profile. In the Vales da Uva Goethe, four wineries combine tradition, culture, and artisanal production in experiences for tourists and other visitors. The number of wineries may change. If you are planning your visit around a winery, check in advance which experiences are currently offered.

Urussanga received the first geographical indication for products made from the Goethe grape. This adds a specific connection to this grape to the broader range of beverages. You can combine culinary interests with a look at local production without treating wine, sparkling wine, grape juice, and Goethe grape products as interchangeable.

Festa do Vinho and Urban Green Space

Festa do Vinho is one of the traditional festivals in the south of Santa Catarina. The 2023 edition included music, culture, food, and wine. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition.

Parque Municipal Ado Cassetari Vieira offers a different focus. It covers about eight hectares of green space and has a skate park with a bowl feature called Bowl Urussanga. The park complements the historic and culinary themes with urban green space and a clearly identified skateboarding facility. Urussanga therefore brings together different interests: history and architecture, wine and cuisine, and green space and skateboarding.
