São Pedro de Alcântara brings together traces of German immigration history, religious remembrance, and nature around the town center. The approximately 700-meter section of the Caminho Imperial, Cachoeira do Salto, and the Casa da Cultura reveal different sides of the town. Festival dates, road access, and information about a bus connection to Florianópolis are also useful for planning a trip.
Historic Routes and Nature Around the Town Center
At the town center of São Pedro de Alcântara, an approximately 700-meter section of the Caminho Imperial is protected as municipal cultural heritage. It includes Pé de moleque-style cobbled sections, characteristic of the imperial era and built by enslaved people. The settlement was established on March 1, 1829, along the Caminho das Tropas. German immigrants called the route Kaiserlicherweg, or Caminho Imperial; it is dated to 1789. This historic route thus brings together the story of the settlement's founding and a preserved stretch of road.
Cachoeira do Salto is located in the Atlantic Forest near the town center. Its history also includes the former use of hydropower: the Usina do Salto, built in 1929, used the waterfall to generate electricity. The facility is no longer operating, but its remains can still be seen at the waterfall. This connects the natural site with a specific chapter in local technological history, while making clear that its former function should not be mistaken for current operations.
Immigration History and Places of Remembrance
São Pedro de Alcântara was founded in 1829 by German immigrants, most of whom came from Hunsrück and Eifel. The municipality is considered the oldest German colony in the state of Santa Catarina. The Sala Alemanha is housed in the Casa da Cultura e Turismo Vereador Pedro Paulo Kremer, a building constructed in the early 1940s. It is dedicated to the history, culture, and contributions of German immigrants to the founding of São Pedro de Alcântara. Hunsrük, a language considered to be of Germanic origin, is also part of the municipality's historical and cultural heritage.
The Santuário Bom Jesus da Santa Cruz was solemnly inaugurated and consecrated on May 13, 1988. The ceremony commemorated the centenary of the abolition of slavery in Brazil. The mortal remains of Tio Marco were later transferred to a grave in front of the sanctuary. This grave became a symbol of veneration and remembrance for many people; Tio Marco was not canonized. Those interested in local history will find here a connection between religious remembrance and the memory of enslaved people.
Architecture and Art in Santa Filomena
In Santa Filomena stands the Casarão Kretzer, built in 1920 in an eclectic style based on a design by German architect Oskar Von Blumenstri. It is part of an architectural complex and is protected as cultural heritage of the state of Santa Catarina under Decree No. 5979, dated December 5, 2002. The Mosaico de Santa Filomena is also part of the complex. The work by Rodrigo de Haro and Idésio Leal depicts the life and martyrdom of Saint Filomena. The building and mosaic offer two tangible ways to explore the area's architectural and artistic history.
Cuisine, Festivals, and When to Visit
One culinary tradition is Recheio de São Pedro de Alcântara, also known as Recheio Alemão, Recheio de Galinha, Filz, or Saco de Velho. The dish is considered traditional in Santa Catarina's first German colony and was declared intangible cultural heritage of São Pedro de Alcântara under Law No. 704, dated September 11, 2012.
The traditional Festa de Santo Isidoro e São Cristóvão, also called Festa do Colono e do Motorista, is held in July at the Igreja Matriz. The festival features local cuisine, a procession with ox carts and small tractors, farmers selling agricultural products, and the blessing of vehicles. This is distinct from the Festa do Padroeiro São Pedro de Alcântara, which takes place on the Sunday closest to October 19, the feast day of Saint São Pedro de Alcântara. If you want to plan your stay around a particular festival, check the dates before making travel plans.
Another option for recreation and events is Recanto das Pedras, a nature-oriented leisure area with a water park. As services and seasonal operations may change, check the latest information before planning your visit.
Getting Around and Finding Accommodation
The Casa da Cultura also serves as the Centro de Atendimento ao Turista. There, you can get information about attractions, events, dining, accommodations, services, and routes in the municipality. When looking for a vacation rental, you can use this information to match your plans to your interests, such as the historic routes, cultural places of remembrance, or a stay during one of the festivals mentioned above.
