At around 800 meters long, Praia Central is also Barra Velha’s busiest stretch of coastline. As a reference point for planning your trip, it brings the city’s coastal character into focus: alongside this central beach, other named beaches, natural attractions and the Centro Cultural Casa de Palmito all shape the choices available. So if you’re considering Barra Velha, you can start by deciding whether to focus more on beaches, nature or culture.

Beaches between the open sea and a surf spot

Barra Velha has more than 20 kilometers of coastline. Its seven beaches are Península, Tabuleiro, do Sol (Pedras Negras), Pedras Brancas, do Grant, do Cerro and Central. Praia do Tabuleiro has an extensive stretch of light-colored sand, open sea, natural dunes and coastal vegetation. Praia do Cerro offers a different focus: it is in the Itajuba neighborhood in the southern part of the municipality and is a traditional surf spot. This lets you distinguish between a particular coastal setting and a specific connection to surfing.

Views, rocks and protected nature

In central Barra Velha, two replicas of Cristo Redentor stand on Morro do Cristo, about 40 meters above sea level. From there, the view takes in Praia Central, Laguna de Barra Velha and much of the coastline. The beach, lagoon and sweeping coastal view are all visible at once. At Costão das Pedras Brancas e Negras, light and dark rocks create a contrast. Parque Natural Municipal Caminho do Peabiru preserves remnants of the Atlantic Forest and protects rare ecosystems of wooded restinga. Rocks, coastal views and restinga each offer a different perspective on Barra Velha’s landscape.

Casa de Palmito: building history and cultural program

Casa de Palmito in Barra Velha was built in the 1940s from the trunks of Juçara palms. This building method was common at the time but is now rare and has almost disappeared. This distinctive architectural history is another highlight alongside the coastal and natural attractions. Centro Cultural Casa de Palmito offers permanent and temporary exhibitions, workshops, meetings, educational activities and cultural events. The program offers different ways to engage with cultural life; specific event dates may vary. If you’d also like to plan your stay around cultural offerings, Casa de Palmito is a point of interest in its own right, alongside the beaches and natural attractions.

Getting there and Ponte Pênsil

The main road access to Barra Velha is via BR-101 at kilometer 86. Road conditions and signage can change, so if you’re traveling by car, check the latest information before setting out. Ponte Pênsil crosses Laguna de Barra Velha and directly connects the Quinta dos Açorianos neighborhood with Praia da Península. On September 9, 2026, the existing bridge was closed for safety reasons. The plans for a replacement had been completed; the new structure was intended to retain its iconic style while providing structural improvements and accessibility. Before a later tender, the project was still going through the approval process. If crossing the bridge is important to your plans, check its current status before traveling.
