Balneário Barra Do Sul combines a range of water activities with a rich cultural history. There are suitable swimming spots along the Canal do Linguado, as well as fishing in the southern lagoon and surfing at Praia do Bispo. At the same time, the town is recognized for its traditional boatbuilding and has archaeological sites dating back a long way. When planning your trip, the question is therefore less about choosing just one theme and more about which focus you prefer and when you would like to experience it.

Water at the Canal and Praia do Bispo

Locally, the Canal do Linguado is also called the “Lagoa.” The “Lagoa” is the southern section of the Canal do Linguado and is suitable for fishing; there are suitable swimming spots along the canal. This means that swimming in the canal and fishing in the southern lagoon offer distinct options. If you want to plan your time by the water, you can first decide whether swimming or fishing better suits your plans.

Praia do Bispo is suitable for surfing. Surf conditions and beach safety change from day to day. This additional water activity therefore calls for different planning than a day focused on swimming or fishing: if surfing is your deciding factor, take the changing conditions on your planned day into account.

Craftsmanship and cultural history

Since 2002, Balneário Barra Do Sul has been recognized as the capital of traditional boatbuilding in Santa Catarina. Six pre-colonial archaeological sites have been dated to as far back as 5,000 years ago. These topics span different periods: recognition of a local craft and an archaeological past stretching back several millennia.

The Casa da Cultura Maria Celestina de Oliveira, known as “Dona Boneca,” opened in 2024. At the Casa, artisans regularly hold workshops for the community. The Feira de Diversidades Artesanais is another cultural offering.

Festa da Tainha is a traditional local festival held in winter. Its seasonal timing may influence when you travel if you want to include the festival in your plans. Check the event dates when planning a specific visit.

Fish and a day visit

Seafood is sold at the Mercado de peixes during the day; fresh fish comes directly from the boats. Check current opening hours before visiting so you can fit a trip to the market into your day.

Festa da Tainha is also associated with the winter season. If the festival is important to your travel dates, check the specific event dates in advance.
