Discover São Lourenço do Sul through its beaches and historic heritage. The town has stretches of beach with different features, alongside buildings and a museum; farther afield in the municipality, there are routes and activities focused on culture, food and rural life. You can plan your trip according to whether you are most interested in time by the water, architectural history or encounters with regional traditions.

Beaches with their own character

Praia da Barrinha is the longest beach in São Lourenço do Sul. Its shallow water offers good conditions for water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing. Praia das Ondinas, also known as Praia das Mães, also has shallow water, which is calm there. It is the most densely vegetated stretch of the waterfront promenade, with plane trees providing shade.

Palm and fig trees line the waterfront promenade at Praia das Nereidas, also known as Praia do Hotel. The beach is used for sunbathing and sports along the lagoon shore. These differences offer a practical guide: Barrinha combines shallow water with the water sports mentioned above, Ondinas stands out for its calm water and shade, and Nereidas is used for both sunbathing and sports.

Architecture and history in town

The Museu Histórico de São Lourenço do Sul is located in the Casa de Cultura. Built by German immigrants in 1919, the building retains its original architecture. The museum displays around 300 exhibits. The Igreja Católica Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes adds to the picture of the area’s architectural history: it was inaugurated on February 2, 1901, and still features well-preserved Portuguese colonial architecture. The museum and church offer different points of interest: exhibits in a historic building on the one hand, and a building whose architecture itself catches the eye on the other.

Routes and experiences throughout the municipality

In the rural interior of São Lourenço do Sul, the Caminho Pomerano leads visitors to descendants of Pomeranian immigrants and traditions such as Noiva de Preto and Convidador. Plan to arrange visits along the route through agencies or businesses on the route. The Casa das Cucas is also located on the Caminho Pomerano, where you can taste traditional Pomeranian cuca and learn about its recipe, passed down through generations.

Other activities each have their own focus. At Inez Klug – Plantas e Ervas in Boa Vista, you can learn about medicinal plants and herbs and sample cachaça de butiá, a herbal liquor. At Recanto das Bergamotas in Boqueirão, the orchard, eating fruit and picking it yourself are all part of the experience. The Do Violino à Estância cultural route connects history, classical and nativist music, nature, typical cuisine and folk dances throughout the municipality. It takes place by prior arrangement with the Novo Destino Viagens agency.

Fazenda do Sobrado also combines current activities with historical connections: it offers horseback rides, equestrian activities, hiking trails and typical gaúcho cuisine. Historically, it served as the headquarters for Bento Gonçalves and his followers and provided Giuseppe Garibaldi with protection and accommodation before the Imperial Armada. The Casa da Imigração Jacob Rheingantz in Coxilha do Barão – Picada Moinhos was built around 1860. It served as a residence for the first 88 immigrants who arrived in the region on January 18, 1858.

In the Sesmaria district, the Centro de Educação Ambiental da Mata Atlântica (CEAMA) offers practical activities and talks on sustainability and environmental education. Alongside history and tradition, the municipality therefore offers environmental education and nature as themes to explore during your trip.

Planning visits and finding accommodation

Some experiences require advance planning: visits to Inez Klug and Recanto das Bergamotas are available by prior appointment only. Group visits to CEAMA are by arrangement, and the Do Violino à Estância route also requires an appointment. Check the arrangements for visiting Casa das Cucas before you travel. If you are looking for hotels in São Lourenço do Sul, first consider whether the beaches in town or the cultural and rural activities throughout the municipality will shape your stay.
