São Leopoldo can be explored through a variety of themes: early railways, the history of the Rio dos Sinos, German immigration and protected natural areas. An annual event held in July may also play a role in planning your trip. These different highlights help you tailor your visits to your interests.

Railway and River History

The Museu do Trem includes the former São Leopoldo railway station, the oldest station in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. It is part of the state’s first railway line. The historic museum also includes an old warehouse, as well as railway cars and locomotives on display in the yard. Museu do Trem is a public museum with free admission. Check the latest visitor information before your trip.

The Museu do Rio offers a different focus. It is housed in a building constructed in 1863, on the site of the former pier at the port of São Leopoldo. The museum features extensive photographic material on the history of the Rio dos Sinos, a large collection on water resources, and spaces for studies and small talks about water issues. The two museums therefore offer different perspectives: Museu do Trem focuses on railways, while Museu do Rio focuses on the river and water-related issues.

Collections and Immigration History

The Museu Histórico Visconde de São Leopoldo was founded in 1959. Its collection includes more than 1,000 historical artifacts; the library holds 8,000 volumes on the history, geography, art, folklore and traditions of Rio Grande do Sul, as well as German immigration. Collection figures may change as catalogues are updated. Students, researchers and tourists can visit the collections. Check the latest opening hours before your visit.

The Sociedade Orpheu offers another perspective on cultural life. It was founded on January 20, 1858, by a double quartet of singers to promote German singing and strengthen the social life of German immigrants. The Sociedade Orpheu is officially considered Brazil’s oldest social club. Its founding links music and community life with a history also reflected in the topics covered by the Museu Histórico library.

Protected Areas and Trail

Founded in 2006, the Parque Natural Municipal Imperatriz Leopoldina was divided into the Parque Natural Municipal Banhado da Imperatriz and the Jardim Botânico – Parque Imperatriz. Banhado da Imperatriz covers 694 hectares and is a fully protected area. Its purpose is to preserve the flora, fauna and ecological processes connected with the Rio dos Sinos water system.

The Parque Natural Municipal Imperatriz Leopoldina also has an approximately 1,300-meter-long ecological trail with an easy difficulty level. Advance registration is required for the trail. As trail conditions and registration procedures may change, confirm registration details before your visit.

A July Event and a Route Starting Point

Since 2006, the Romaria do Padre Reus has been held annually on the second Sunday in July. The route runs from the Igreja Conceição to the sanctuary, where an open-air Mass is celebrated. If you plan to travel at this time, take the date into account and check the event details in advance.

Marco Zero also provides a point of reference for travelers interested in the Rota Romântica: it is the route’s starting point in São Leopoldo. Together, these places show different sides of the destination, though they do not all need to have the same focus. Railway history, river and water-related issues, and immigration history are distinct themes alongside protected areas and the July event held on a set date.
