In Rio Grande, maritime exhibitions, island culture and an extensive Atlantic coastline offer distinct highlights to explore. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on museums and harbor life, coastal scenery, or nature and tradition. Each attraction has its own emphasis: some turn the spotlight on the oceans and Antarctica, others on navigation and the harbor, while the islands add cultural and natural perspectives.

Museums spanning the ocean, harbor and Antarctica

The Museu Oceanográfico has a public exhibition about the life and dynamics of the oceans. Panels, models and aquariums are displayed alongside various instruments used in oceanographic research; hundreds of shells are also on view. The range of topics thus extends from the sea to the tools used to study it. The Museu Antártico has a different focus: it is housed in a replica of the first facilities of the Estação Antártica Comandante Ferraz.

The Museu Náutico is located in Armazém 4 at Porto Velho. It presents Rio Grande's maritime history and the city's close relationship with the estuary of Lagoa dos Patos. The Museu do Porto, in turn, is dedicated to the development of equipment for navigation and cargo transport, as well as equipment used in activities connected with the Port of Rio Grande. If you are interested in the city by the water, you can focus on different perspectives on the ocean, harbor and seafaring rather than treating all the collections as if they covered the same subject.

The Eco-Museu da Ilha da PĂłlvora also combines an exhibition and visitor services with a historic building: it is housed in a fully restored neocolonial home dating from 1856. Biblioteca Rio-Grandense is a private institution, but for a long period it maintained regular public access for the general public. If you plan a visit, check current access arrangements in advance.

Coastal scenery and wildlife

Praia do Cassino is part of the Município de Rio Grande. The 254-kilometer-long ocean beach has fine white sand and is described as the longest continuous beach in South America. Two paved roads connect it to the city: the Rio Grande–Cassino road and Estrada da Barra. These details help distinguish Cassino as a coastal destination in its own right; they do not indicate a specific length of visit.

The Molhes da Barra consist of two breakwaters built from large stones that extend almost five kilometers into the Atlantic. One is in the Município de Rio Grande, the other in São José do Norte. The Molhes are described as a refuge for sea lions and fur seals. Another natural highlight is Esec do Taim, considered one of South America's most species-rich areas for waterbirds.

Island culture and habitats

On Ilha dos Marinheiros, you can see buildings and ruins of Azorean colonial architecture, as well as the chapels of SĂŁo JoĂŁo Batista, Santa Cruz and Nossa Senhora da SaĂşde. The island also offers cuisine influenced by Portuguese cooking and handicrafts made from wicker, wood and tapestry. Jurupiga is considered its best-known locally produced artisanal drink. Culture, cuisine and crafts give the island a different focus from the city's museums.

On Ilha da Pólvora, 42 hectares of marshland provide habitat for birds, rodents, larvae and juvenile fish, as well as mollusks and crustaceans. The island is reached by a boat that departs from the pier at the Museu Oceanográfico. A visit therefore takes in both the Eco-Museu exhibition and the marshland scenery, without confusing the two.

Choose the highlights for your stay

For your planning, it is worth prioritizing your interests: the museums differ in their topics, while Cassino and the Molhes draw attention to the coast, and Taim and the marshlands of Ilha da PĂłlvora are suited to nature observation. On Ilha dos Marinheiros, architecture, cuisine and crafts are additional highlights. This way, you can decide which facets of Rio Grande matter to your trip and tailor your vacation rental search to your chosen travel focus.
