A 72-kilometer-long waterfront promenade, parks offering a range of sports and recreational activities, and cultural venues with a history of their own: Porto Alegre can be explored through several clearly distinct themes. There are also boat trips through islands and channels, as well as a rural tourism program within the city. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you want to focus on the waterfront, green spaces, culture or an excursion into the surrounding countryside.

Waterfront Promenade and Boat Trips

The Orla do Guaíba stretches for 72 kilometers and is one of Porto Alegre’s most popular outdoor recreation areas. It is a prominent landmark for anyone looking to include the waterfront in their stay. Tourist boat trips offer a different focus: they travel through the islands and channels of the Delta do Jacuí. The waterfront promenade and boat tours thus offer different ways to make the city’s waterside landscape part of your trip.

If you are planning a boat trip, check the latest departure times and operators in advance. Operators and schedules may change; the trip travels through the islands and channels of the Delta do Jacuí.

Parks for Sports and Exercise

At Parque Marinha do Brasil, you’ll find wooded areas, various sports courts, roller-skating facilities, running and cycling paths, and a large snake-style skatepark. The options range from running and cycling paths to facilities for various sports. If you’re looking for a range of outdoor activities during your stay, the park offers several clearly defined options in one place.

Parque Moinhos de Vento also offers recreational and sports facilities, including jogging and roller-skating, soccer, tennis and volleyball courts, and equipment for outdoor fitness training. One of the park’s distinctive features is an Azorean-style windmill, modeled on the windmills that existed in the early days of the neighborhood. It is considered a major tourist attraction. The park thus brings together sports facilities and a structure connected to the neighborhood’s early history.

Culture, Market and City History

Brique da Redenção was founded on March 19, 1978, and is considered part of Porto Alegre’s cultural and tourist heritage. Art, gastronomy and community life define its character. At the stalls, you’ll find handicrafts, visual and fine arts, handmade food products and antiques. Since individual stalls’ offerings may change, the specific mix may not be the same on every visit.

Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana also combines culture with architectural history: it is housed in the former Hotel Majestic, whose building was designated a historic heritage site in 1983. Near the Casa, the Memória das Águas installation recalls the Guaíba’s former shoreline. An organic line is set into Portuguese paving stones to mark it; the line refers to the land reclamation projects carried out in Porto Alegre since the 19th century. The installation thus brings a tangible historical reference into the urban landscape.

Nature and the Rural Surroundings

The Museu de Ciências Naturais houses 432,000 animal and plant specimens from Brazil’s natural heritage, particularly from Rio Grande do Sul. Jardim Lutzenberger adds to the nature theme with approximately one hundred plant species, about a third of which are native to Porto Alegre. The garden is currently temporarily closed for renovation work. Take this status into account when planning your trip rather than including it as a visitor attraction that is currently open.

The Caminhos Rurais are located between the Extremo Sul and the east of Porto Alegre. Nine rural tourism businesses participate in the program. This adds a different, rural-themed area to the parks, cultural venues and waterfront promenade. The businesses participating may change, so check the current offerings before visiting.
