Discover Palmitinho through its distinctive historic and community sites: a chapel near Praça Tiradentes, the Museu Colonial Francisco Balestrin, and squares for events and recreation. Other highlights include a tourist attraction in Linha Boa Vista and the Leitão Fest tradition. Together, these offer different ways to explore religious history, colonization, local life and the landscape.

Religious history

The first Santa Teresinha Chapel was built around 1942 near Praça Tiradentes. It is a community landmark for prayer, sacramental life, meetings and gatherings. The Paróquia Santa Teresinha do Menino Jesus de Palmitinho was founded on 13 June 1961. The chapel and parish dates thus mark two milestones in the town’s religious history: the chapel site’s role in the community and the precisely dated founding of the parish.

Museum and the memory of colonization

The Museu Colonial Francisco Balestrin opened in 2014 and preserves the memory of the northwestern region of Rio Grande do Sul. This open-air museum features structures that show how the colonizers lived in Médio Alto Uruguai. Its replicas include a water well, a grain mill, a reconstructed room and a “casinha” used for bodily functions. Praça das Etnias is in Vila Boa Vista and displays objects and explanatory panels about the history of Palmitinho’s colonization; the Museu Colonial Francisco Balestrin is in Linha Boa Vista. The two sites offer different ways to explore the subject: one focuses on objects and explanatory panels, the other on reconstructed structures.

Squares and local life

Praça da Matriz has an area set aside for events, benches shaded by trees and a children’s playground. If any of these amenities are important for your visit, check their current condition in advance. Praça do Lago is also one of Palmitinho’s places for leisure and recreation, and has been an important place for local residents since the 1970s. Lago Vulcânico Ângelo Balestrin is another tourist attraction in the locality of Linha Boa Vista.

Festival tradition and regional cuisine

The Leitão Fest has been held more than 15 times and took place in May, alongside Palmitinho’s city anniversary celebrations. The festival featured pork dishes made with products from producers in Palmitinho. This historical example of the event brings together celebration and local production. If you would like to include a festival visit in your trip, check the event dates in advance.

Plan your journey

The route to Palmitinho follows the BR-158 and then the ERS-472. Check road conditions before setting off. Intermunicipal buses run between Frederico Westphalen and Palmitinho; the journey takes about 40 minutes. Check the timetable before departure and bear in mind that the stated journey time is approximate. These details can help you plan your journey, while the historic sites, squares and landscape attractions offer different ways to spend your stay.
