A festival of nativist music is part of the cultural heritage of Rio Grande do Sul—and takes place every year in Palmeira das Missões. In addition, monuments, a cultural center, and destinations in the countryside offer various ways to enjoy a stay that combines culture and nature.
Carijo and cultural heritage
Carijo da Canção Gaúcha is an annual festival of nativist music held in Palmeira das Missões. Under state law No. 12.282/05, it is considered part of the cultural heritage of Rio Grande do Sul and is also included on the state’s official calendar of cultural and tourism events. Over its more than three decades of history, the festival has provided opportunities to engage with the state’s art, gastronomy, and history; it also promotes tourism and entertainment. If Carijo is the reason for your trip, check the event dates for your travel year before planning your stay around it.
Monuments and city history
The Obelisco Central marks the city’s centenary and stands at the site where settlement in Palmeira das Missões began. The Monumento aos Margatinhos commemorates a different historical event: it remembers three Maragatos who were killed by Chimangos in connection with the Revolution of 1923. The Monumento do Pé-no-Chão honors the 3rd Provisional Corps “Pé no Chão.” These sites therefore reflect different themes: the city’s anniversary and the start of settlement sit alongside memories of events from the Revolution.
The Monumento ao Bandeirante is located in the central area of Palmeira das Missões. The Monumento da Cuia is a tribute monument on Avenida Independência, opposite Cotrisal. For cultural events, the Centro Cultural Professor Mozart Pereira Soares offers facilities for theater, dance, cinema, and music. The Parque Municipal de Exposições Tealmo José Schardong is an event park. These places represent different cultural facets, from memorial sites to venues for various art forms.
The Capela do Senhor Bom Jesus is also a cultural point of interest: it is used for religious celebrations in the countryside of Palmeira das Missões, in Linha Espinilho, and lies 8 km from the center. Sítio Elisa is also designated as a place to visit.
Yerba mate and destinations in the countryside
Palmeira das Missões is known as the Land of Yerba Mate. Several producers are based there, and the population maintains the tradition of chimarrão. The “Caminho dos Ervais” tourist route, introduced in Palmeira das Missões in 2026, is a good fit. It includes a visit to the Müller family’s yerba mate groves in the municipality of Santa Terezinha, which can be reached from the center of Palmeira das Missões.
The Rio Guarita is among the natural attractions of Palmeira das Missões. Another feature with a clearly specified timeframe is the Partiu Natureza project: in 2024, it used trails and roads in the countryside to reach rivers and waterfalls. By contrast, the Parque Municipal de Exposições is described as an event park; the rural routes and destinations offer a different focus. Thus, alongside culture and local history, routes to bodies of water and yerba mate groves are also part of a stay here.
Getting there and choosing where to stay
The BR-158 is one of the access roads to Palmeira das Missões and therefore a useful reference point for getting there. Other landmarks include the centrally located Monumento ao Bandeirante, the Capela do Senhor Bom Jesus, 8 km from the center, and the trip from the city center to the groves in Santa Terezinha. You can factor these different location details into your plans without combining the destinations into a fixed route.
