Jaguarão combines a distinctive border identity with a protected historic ensemble and a rich cultural history. The Ponte Internacional Barão de Mauá crosses the Jaguarão River on the border between Brazil and Uruguay, connecting Jaguarão on the Brazilian side with Rio Branco on the Uruguayan side. Its architecture, collections, and historic cultural sites give the destination a range of points of interest, from architectural history to the city’s social history.

Historic Ensemble and Distinctive Architecture

The Conjunto Histórico e Paisagístico de Jaguarão was listed by Iphan in 2011. The ensemble includes buildings in Colonial, Eclectic, Art Deco, and Modernist styles. This range shows that Jaguarão’s architecture cannot be reduced to a single theme. Those particularly interested in architectural history will find several styles within this protected ensemble.

The Mercado Público Municipal is also an important part of this heritage: it is protected as historic heritage by the state of Rio Grande do Sul and is also part of Jaguarão’s federally protected historic and landscape ensemble. The residences on Rua das Portas (XV de Novembro) offer a different architectural accent, with their finely carved doors made from noble wood standing out. Thus, alongside the protection of entire ensembles, specific details of individual houses also take center stage.

Museum, Collection, and Archive

The Museu Dr. Carlos Barbosa Gonçalves is housed in a mansion built in 1886 and converted into a museum in 1977. Its family collection includes tableware, works of art, photographs, personal belongings, and furniture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The variety of objects brings everyday items together with images and works of art, giving the collection a distinctive place in the city’s history.

Another cultural destination is the Instituto Histórico Geográfico. It houses the Museu Alfredo Varela, a historical archive, and a library. The museum, archive, and library each offer a different focus, bringing collections and historical documents together. Along with the Museu Dr. Carlos Barbosa Gonçalves, they present a picture that encompasses both objects from a family collection and history preserved by institutions.

Theater and Cultural History

The history of the Teatro Esperança can be traced precisely: construction began in 1887, and the theater opened ten years later. Over the course of its history, it hosted national and international theater companies and was also adapted for circus performances. Its history therefore encompasses different forms of public entertainment, not just theatrical performances.

The Clube 24 de Agosto tells another side of the city’s history. It was founded in 1918 as a social gathering place for Jaguarão’s Black community. While the Teatro Esperança is notable for its changing uses for stage and circus performances, the Clube is connected to a specific community and its history. The Casa de Cultura adds to these cultural connections: it was converted into a cultural center in 1996, hosting activities such as workshops, art exhibitions, and cultural showcases.

Cityscape and Visit Planning

The Ruínas da Enfermaria Militar are located on Cerro da Pólvora. From there, visitors can enjoy a view of the cityscape and the river. This viewpoint connects the landscape with the river, which also shapes the city’s position on the border. Visits to the Cemitério das Irmandades require an appointment in advance. If you plan to visit, arrange your appointment beforehand.

When choosing accommodation in Jaguarão, these different themes can provide a practical starting point: Would you mainly like to explore architecture, are you more interested in collections and historical documents, or are theater and community history your main focus? The sites offer a variety of areas of interest without setting a fixed order for visiting them. This lets you choose Jaguarão based on your own interests and then search for hotels for your stay.
