Engenho Velho can be explored through three themes: the history of a sawmill, its rural character, and a cultural life featuring various events. If you are looking for a vacation rental in Engenho Velho, these highlights can help you choose a destination that suits your interests. Local history, the river and waterfall, and the cultural events mentioned here offer different points of interest for planning your trip.

From Sawmill to Place Name

Around 1928, the Camiloti brothers acquired a pine forest in Engenho Velho and built a sawmill there, known as an “Engenho.” The Camillotti-Tesser sawmill also represents the history behind the name: the mill, called “Engenho” by Italians, gave Engenho Velho its name. As timber became scarcer, it fell into disrepair and became scrap. A settlement around a sawmill grew into a village and later a town. The local history thus traces the journey from forest use to a settlement whose name recalls the sawmill that once stood there.

Riverside Landscape and Rural Character

Until around 1920, the small settlement of Engenho Velho stood beside the Arroio Lajeado dos Lopes. The Lajeado Grande is considered the municipality’s most important river. Another historical detail about the landscape concerns the land along the right bank of its basin: starting at the source of the Arroio dos Índios, it formed an Indigenous and forestry reserve. The Cascata de Engenho Velho is considered one of the municipality’s tourist attractions. Together, the river, waterfall and historic settlement location offer different perspectives on the local landscape.

Agriculture is also part of the area’s character. It focuses on soybeans, corn and wheat. Fruit growing takes place on a smaller scale; agriculture also includes dairy farming and pig farming. These details describe Engenho Velho’s economic background, while the references to the waterfall and river complement its landscape.

Culture and Events

For the 13th edition of Engenho Crioulo, a program of music, gastronomy, culture and activities for the whole family was planned for September 4–12, 2026. The second Feira da Agricultura Familiar was also planned as part of this edition. The 7th Festival da Canção “Canta Engenho Velho” was announced as a two-day event in March 2026, featuring local and national talent. An organizing committee was appointed for the festival in 2026. In 2025, Municipal Law No. 1113 also established Semana Farroupilha in Engenho Velho.

Previous editions of Engenho Crioulo offer a glimpse of past music programs. At the 10th Engenho Crioulo, Banda Gurias GaĂşchas and Grupo TchĂŞ Fandango performed on September 17, 2022. On September 10, 2023, as part of the 11th Engenho Crioulo, the group Os Monarcas gave a three-hour show starting at 10 p.m. at Esporte Clube Primeiro de Maio, Rua Virginia Luzzatto 180, in central Engenho Velho.

Crafts and Trip Planning

The Aldeia Toldo da Serrinha in Engenho Velho is also part of the area’s cultural identity. In 2024, transport was planned for Indigenous artisans from the Aldeia to Porto Alegre to market their crafts.

When deciding on your trip, you can consider local history, landscape and culture as separate highlights: the sawmill history explains the place name and the town’s development, the river and Cascata represent the landscape, and the events mentioned here showcase different cultural formats. Tailor your vacation rental search to the theme you want to shape your stay. If a specific event date is important, check it against the program for the relevant edition before booking.
