In Caicó, festivals, cultural venues and regional cuisine offer practical starting points for planning a trip. The annual Festa de Sant’Ana takes place in July; the Festa do Rosário is held in October. Between festivals, and outside festival dates, museums, cultural centers and crafts offer further ways to explore the town. First decide whether you want a festival to determine your travel dates or whether history and culture should be the focus.

Festivals as a reason to travel

The Festa de Sant’Ana begins on the Thursday before July 26 and lasts until the following Sunday. Its dates are therefore tied to the feast day on July 26. Its sociocultural program includes the Feirinha de Sant’Ana, the Arrastão da Juventude, the Marcha dos Idosos and the Baile dos Coroas, as well as events on Ilha de Sant’Ana. Within the celebration, the “beija” is considered the strongest expression of faith. The Festa thus brings together a range of events with an explicitly religious meaning.

The festival’s history offers another perspective: a reassessment published by IPHAN in 2021 describes the Festa de Sant’Ana in Caicó as a tradition more than 260 years old. The festival’s history also includes the cavalcade, which was revived by a group from Caicó in 2002. This is a historical reference, not a statement about its current annual schedule.

The Festa do Rosário is held in Caicó in October and features the Afro-Brazilian dance “dança do espontão.” This means there are two clearly distinct festival dates on the calendar: the Festa de Sant’Ana around July 26 and the Festa do Rosário in October. The Carnaval de Caicó is also culturally significant: it draws thousands of revelers with street blocks and sound trucks, and is recognized as intangible, historical, cultural and tourist heritage of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. For specific event times, it is a good idea to check the latest information before traveling.

Museums and cultural venues

The Museu do Seridó is located in central Caicó, at Rua Amaro Cavalcanti 123. It is an affiliated institution of UFRN dedicated to preserving, conserving and communicating the memory and history of Seridó. The museum occupies the former building of the Senado da Câmara and the public jail of Vila do Príncipe; construction was completed in 1812.

The Museu do Seridó collection is organized into five exhibition areas: the land and people of Seridó before the colonial period, society and labor, devotion and art in Seridó, crafts and art, and food production for subsistence. These themes move from the region’s history before the colonial period through social and religious perspectives to craft and everyday production.

Exhibitions are held at Casa de Cultura Sobrado Padre Guerra, also known as Casa da Cultura. Its permanent exhibitions include “Brinquedos Populares” and “Galeria dos Imortais Caicoenses.” Centro Cultural Deputado Adjuto Dias hosts performances in theater, music, dance and visual arts. The three institutions have different focuses: historical collections at the Museu do Seridó, exhibitions at Casa da Cultura and performances at Centro Cultural.

Crafts, cuisine and other places to visit

Among the distinctive local craft traditions are Caicó’s fine embroideries, which have received a geographical indication seal. The cuisine also has distinct regional roots: local dishes include carne de sol, queijo de coalho and buchada de bode, prepared according to traditional recipes from the Sertão. These dishes and crafts offer another perspective on the festivals and cultural institutions, without requiring you to make your trip about just one theme.

Other places of interest in Caicó include Castelo de Engady, Poço de Sant’Ana and Casa de Pedra. The best time to visit depends on whether you want to experience the Festa de Sant’Ana in July or the Festa do Rosário in October. If you are planning a trip outside festival dates, you can focus on museums, cultural venues, cuisine and crafts. Then set your travel dates and look for hotels in Caicó that suit your travel period.
