Valença combines striking high points with a rich cultural heritage: a cross dating from 1803 stands on a summit, a park and a church are located in the city center, and a 19th-century building now serves as a cultural center. This offers a clear choice when planning your trip: viewpoints or urban history. You can organize the sites around the themes that interest you most and get to know different facets of the city.

Viewpoints with different perspectives

Morro do Cruzeiro is 800 meters high; a cross dating from 1803 stands at its summit. Pico de Valença, also called Pico da Torre de TV, is located at an altitude of about 1,100 meters. From Pico, you can see the city of Valença and its surroundings. The elevations make the two peaks easy to compare, while their described features differ: the historic cross marks the summit of Morro do Cruzeiro, while Pico is chiefly known for its view.

Another viewpoint is Mirante da Serra dos Mascates. From there, you can see the entire city of Valença. Together with the view from Pico, this gives you a clear distinction to consider: Pico offers a view of the city and its surroundings, while the panorama from Mirante takes in the entire city. The two names therefore refer to separate viewpoints, not to a prescribed sequence or a shared walking route.

Church, park, and cultural center

Igreja Nossa Senhora do Rosário has a turbulent history: it was completed in 1853, later demolished, and rebuilt in 1924. This sequence of completion, demolition, and reconstruction makes the church a tangible starting point for exploring Valença’s architectural history. It is located in the city center.

Praça XV de Novembro, also known as Jardim de Baixo, is also in the city center. The square is a landscaped park with a lake, a fountain, and lush vegetation. It adds a green urban space to the area’s historic architecture. Jardim de Baixo is another name for the same square, not an additional attraction.

Casa de Cultura Lea Pentagna offers a different focus: the building dates from the 19th century and was converted into a cultural center. Both its original period of construction and its current cultural use shape how the site is understood. Unlike the church’s history, Casa de Cultura is not a story of demolition and reconstruction, but of a historic building being repurposed.

Museums and their themes

Museu da Catedral is located on the upper floor of the right wing of the parish church in central Valença. Its location is closely connected to the church. Museu da Santa Casa has its own thematic focus: it is dedicated to the history and development of medical practice. It is located in the former ballroom of Santa Casa, has been operating since 1997, and today has a collection of more than 200 objects.

These cultural sites can be distinguished by their respective themes: Igreja Nossa Senhora do Rosário represents a turbulent architectural history, Casa de Cultura Lea Pentagna the conversion of a building into a cultural center, and Museu da Santa Casa the history of medical practice. Museu da Catedral is defined by its location in the right wing of the parish church. Along with the landscaped park and the viewpoints, these sites offer a choice between urban history, cultural themes, and views over Valença.
