Rio Claro offers different highlights for a trip of discovery: the history of São João Marcos, a multimodal long-distance trail and striking natural attractions. If you’re looking for a vacation rental, you can first consider whether historic sites, landscapes or activities along the Volta das Águas will shape your stay.

Archaeology and the History of São João Marcos

The Parque Arqueológico e Ambiental de São João Marcos is considered Brazil’s first urban archaeological site. The park includes a permanent Centro de Memória with models, banners, objects, digital totems and a video about the history of São João Marcos. Visitors can also walk the entire Caminho Imperial.

The Igreja Nossa Senhora da Piedade also tells the story of the municipality: enslaved people built it in the late 18th or early 19th century. The church houses the image of Rio Claro’s patron saint. The Casa da Cultura Manoel Gonçalves de Souza Portugal preserves, among other things, a historic clock from the former town of São João Marcos. The Capela de São Joaquim da Grama was declared state cultural heritage by the Instituto Natural do Patrimônio Cultural (Inepac).

The Volta das Águas: Multiple Ways to Travel

Municipal Law No. 1.402/2025 officially establishes the Volta das Águas de Rio Claro long-distance trail as a strategic public initiative for sustainable development. The Trilha Volta das Águas passes through ecological, cultural and historic areas of Rio Claro. These include the Parque Arqueológico de São João Marcos, the Caminho do Ouro and places connected to the coffee cycle.

The multimodal route is 310.77 kilometers long in total. Route distances published in December 2025 list 174 kilometers for horseback riding, 183 kilometers for hiking, 20 kilometers for canoeing and 171 kilometers for cycling. The total length and the distances listed by mode of travel answer different questions: the Volta is not described solely as a hiking trail, but includes sections for several activities.

Landscapes, Views and Outdoor Activities

Pedra do Bispo is a 1,650-meter-high rock formation in the Serra da Carioca. From the summit, the view extends as far as the city of Angra dos Reis, among other places. The road Serra dos Coelhos leads to Pedra do Bispo; drainage and paving work has been carried out along a stretch of about 2.5 kilometers. Check road conditions before setting out.

A total of 371 bird species had been recorded in Rio Claro as of April 2026; the municipality ranked 17th in the state. This figure may change as more records are collected. The Represa de Ribeirão das Lajes is considered a fishing spot for tucunaré, particularly between March and September. Check seasonal conditions and access locally. Rafting on the Rio Piraí is one of Rio Claro’s ecotourism and extreme sports activities. Providers and river conditions may vary; check both before making plans.

Events in Lídice

In Lídice, in the municipality of Rio Claro, the Festa da Paz is considered one of Rio Claro’s most longstanding celebrations and is connected to the town’s history. The annual program changes. Also in Lídice, the recurring Vem Passarinhar combines birdwatching with highland hikes, including along historic sections of the former railway line. Dates and routes vary.

When looking for a vacation rental, you can decide what to prioritize during your stay: historic sites, the landscape around Pedra do Bispo or the different activities of the Volta das Águas.
