At Praça Fonseca Portela in the center of Rio Bonito, agricultural produce and handicrafts come together. Churches and cultural centers offer further insights into local history, while the municipality also has waterfalls, hiking routes and scenic destinations. Rio Bonito can thus be discovered through both its urban cultural heritage and its natural surroundings and rural traditions.
Markets and Local Produce
The Feira do Produtor Agro takes place on Wednesdays and Fridays at Praça Fonseca Portela. There, you can buy fruit and vegetables directly from agricultural producers. The Feira Agro also offers cheese, sweets, jellies, cassava and banana chips, and other local foods. The Feira de Artesanato focuses on something different: every week, handmade items such as fabric paintings, crochet work, bows, personalized boxes and modeled biscuit figures are sold at the same square. Check the market days and the items on offer before your trip.
Cultural Sites and Baroque Architecture
At the center of town stands the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, the first chapel built in Rio Bonito. Its elegant, linear Baroque architecture, with bell towers and Baroque relief paintings inside, gives the building distinctive details. The church is a protected historic landmark. It is therefore a tangible reference point for Rio Bonito’s architectural history.
Casa da Cultura Hélio Nogueira houses Rio Bonito’s documentary, artistic and cultural collections. It was established as a meeting place for historians, researchers, teachers, students, artists and anyone wishing to discuss the city’s culture and history. Founded in 1996, Centro Cultural B. Lopes gives the entire community access to Rio Bonito’s cultural events and forms of expression. Alongside the church architecture, these institutions reveal different aspects of cultural life: collections, exchange and community culture sit alongside historic heritage.
In Basílio, the municipality’s third district, stands Capela de Sant’Ana. This religious monument of national architectural significance is an example of the late phase of Brazilian Baroque. IPHAN designated the chapel a protected landmark on March 13, 1970.
Nature and Trails in the Municipality
Pedra do Navio is in the Serra do Sambê, seven kilometers from the town center. Its highlights include impressive scenery and a particularly beautiful sunset. Cachoeira de Tomascar has a four-meter-high waterfall, pools and natural showers, and is suitable for walks and hikes. Parque da Caixa D’Água, at the foot of the Serra do Sambê, is a good place for hiking, picnics and observing the region’s diverse wildlife and plant life. Each natural destination also has its own appeal: water and pools shape the experience at the waterfall, while the park combines activity and nature watching.
The Admário Ribeiro de Oliveira hang gliding launch ramp is also in the Serra do Sambê and is one of Rio Bonito’s attractions. Before visiting natural sites such as the waterfall, park or ramp, check the relevant access and operating conditions. Rural tourism offers another distinct experience: excursions in rural, family-friendly surroundings combine time in nature with agriculture and the community’s traditions.
The municipal Caminhos de Rio Bonito framework was officially launched in 2024 and divides tourist routes into smaller routes such as Catimbau, Lavras, Braçanã and Tomascar; individual routes may change over time. When the Trilha Caminhos de Rio Bonito was officially launched, its first signposted section was located among the local tourist attractions in Tomascar. The concept combines hiking with hang gliding and mountain biking, sports practiced in the municipality. The municipality also encourages the creation of private nature reserves known as RPPNs. These areas are strictly protected; environmental education, tourism and scientific research are permitted there.
