Mendes is one of the 14 municipalities on the Vale do Café tourist route. When planning a trip to the town, you can choose from different points of interest, including historic railway structures, 19th-century architecture and a hiking trail with panoramic views of hills and valleys. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can plan your stay around which of these aspects you would like to explore in more depth.

Railway History and Townscape

Mendes preserves examples of 19th-century architecture. The old Matriz Church is a testament to the town’s history. The Antiga Igreja Matriz de Santa Cruz was built in 1857. Tunnel 12 Bis is an earlier historic landmark. It was built in 1815 in the Humberto Antunes district. Together with Tunnel 12, it is one of the historic landmarks of Brazilian railway engineering in Mendes.

The two railway stations also recall different opening years. Estação de Humberto Antunes originally opened in 1894; 1911 is given as the original opening year of Estação Ferroviária Neri Ferreira. Neri Ferreira is a historic landmark in Mendes. The dates help place the two historic railway sites in context without equating their individual character.

The Ladeira João Vieira is also part of the townscape’s history. The historic street was laid out in the 19th century, is paved with irregular stones and connects the town center to the local cemetery. The Prédio Histórico da Cervejaria Teutônia adds to the architectural heritage as a 19th-century industrial landmark.

Hiking Trail, Garden and Nature Destinations

A hiking trail leads to Mirante do Cruzeiro. From there, panoramic views stretch across hills and valleys. Horto Municipal is located at the end of Morro do Socorro; it is considered the site of the largest planting of Atlantic Forest seedlings in Brazil. The viewpoint and garden are two separate destinations that put the landscape and plants in the spotlight.

A waterfall near Hotel Cascatinha Morsing is also among the destinations in Mendes. Check access conditions before visiting. Access requirements apply to Jequitibá Milenar: the visit requires a 40-minute walk through Martins Costa and permission from Sr. Tavinho, the landowner. Arrange this permission and check access conditions before your trip.

Getting There and Local Transport

The drive from Rio de Janeiro to Mendes takes about two hours, following the BR-116 (Presidente Dutra) and RJ-145. This is an estimated travel time, and road conditions can change. The districts of Humberto Antunes, Jabuticabeira, Martins Costa, Morsing, Oscar Rudger, Santa Rosa, and Ventania/Santa Rita/IndependĂŞncia are relevant for navigating local public transport. Timetables and route coverage may change, so it is advisable to check before travelling.

Cultural Program and Trip Planning

“Samba e Choro na Praça” is a weekly cultural event held at Praça Dr. João Neri. The program includes free live performances, local cuisine and handicrafts. Before your trip, check the event date and whether it is still held weekly.

Mendes’s cultural centers offer exhibitions, workshops, musical performances, theater and events celebrating the municipality’s traditions. Since the program should be checked before your visit, it is worth looking at the latest dates. This makes it easy to include a cultural activity in your plans, while the historic buildings, viewpoint and nature destinations each offer their own focus.
