A historic tour example, a museum in Centro and the history of the Matriz give Maricá a clear cultural focus. When planning your trip, it is helpful to treat the former guided route, group visits by appointment and information about the municipality as a whole as separate points of reference.

Historic Route and Visit Planning

The first cultural city tour (City Tour Cultural) followed a guided route through the historic center and lasted about four hours. Stops included the Escadaria da Boa Vista, the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Amparo and the Casa de Cultura. The tour also visited the cultural carriage installed at the Central de Passeios, where local handicrafts were on display. The roughly four-hour duration applies to this first tour. If you would like to include a guided route in your trip, check in advance whether it is being offered and what its current duration is.

The Museu Histórico de Maricá is located at Praça Orlando de Barros Pimentel in Centro. The museum offers guided visits for groups interested in the city’s history and cultural heritage; advance booking is required. So if you are planning a group visit, arrange it in advance. The Central de Passeios provides tourists with maps and cultural and food guides. As visitor information may change, check before your visit which materials are currently available.

The Matriz and Festival Program

Construction of the Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Amparo began in 1778; it was inaugurated on August 15, 1802. This date continues to mark the feast of the patron saint. The traditional Festa da Padroeira Nossa Senhora do Amparo offers a cultural perspective on Maricá as well as its religious significance: the 2026 program included four days of free events featuring religious celebrations, cultural performances and concerts. Some events took place at Praça Orlando de Barros Pimentel in Centro. If you are considering traveling for the Festa, check the program for the year of your visit; the event days mentioned here refer to 2026.

Landscape Across the Municipality

The landscape information refers to the municipality as a whole and covers a different scale from the cultural sites in the center. Maricá’s coastline is about 46 kilometers long, stretching between Itaipuaçu and Jaconé. The municipality’s lagoon complex includes Lagoa de Araçatiba. Cachoeira do Espraiado is also in the municipality, not in Centro de Maricá; it has been recognized as tangible cultural, tourism and landscape heritage of the state of Rio de Janeiro. These three facts describe different aspects: an approximate coastline length, part of the lagoon complex and state-recognized heritage.

Getting Around the Municipality

Maricá’s Tarifa Zero system includes free buses (“Vermelhinhos”), vans and bicycles (“Vermelhinhas”). These transport options are a separate planning consideration when learning about mobility in the municipality. As transport regulations may change, check the current conditions before traveling.
