Macuco brings together a history shaped by coffee and railways, festivals, agriculture and opportunities for eco-friendly excursions. This gives you several themes to choose from when planning your trip: local history and music, events connected with agriculture, or experiences in the countryside. The RJ116 is the main access road to Macuco.

Railway history and musical tradition

Macuco’s history is closely linked to a railway line built in 1860. It connected the Boa Sorte, Gavião and Laranjeiras coffee farms belonging to the Baron of Nova Friburgo. The line was intended to make it easier to transport large harvests to Rio de Janeiro. Many coffee growers also established farms along the banks of the Rio Macuco. Together, these stories show how agriculture and transport were connected to the development of the town.

The Sociedade Musical São João Batista music society is also part of Macuco’s cultural history. Founded in 1910, it resumed its activities in 1980, bringing retretas and festivals back to life. During the Alvorada de São João, the society paraded through the streets, playing a repertoire ranging from classical to popular music.

On January 31 and February 1, 2026, Macuco became an open-air stage for folklore at the 53rd Festival de Folias de Reis. Around 50 groups from different cities in the state of Rio de Janeiro and a neighboring state gathered for the event. Performances featured religious banners, traditional costumes, poems and rhymes, as well as instruments such as drums, caixas, triangles, violas and accordions.

In June 2026, the traditional festival honoring São João Batista, the municipality’s patron saint, brought together expressions of faith, culture, sport and entertainment. Residents and visitors came together around a tradition that has lasted for several generations. The Alvorada de São João was a musical part of the festival: the Sociedade Musical São João Batista paraded through the streets, playing pieces ranging from classical to popular music.

Agriculture, festivals and regional cuisine

In 2023, Macuco’s Concurso Leiteiro marked half a century of tradition. Its 53rd edition was part of the Exposição Agropecuária, lasted four days and included ten milking sessions. Expo-Macuco is an agricultural fair considered a tradition in Macuco. At the 2025 edition, visitors could browse locally made crafts and try typical dishes at the crafts and food fair. The program also included the Rodeio American Country and Fazendinha Kids, where children learned about and enjoyed spending time with farm animals.

Rural experiences also bring agriculture and gastronomy together. A rural tourism route introduced in 2019 included the historic Fazenda Val de Palmas. A visitor itinerary reported in 2023 included visits to producers of sweets, cheese and artisanal cachaça, as well as lunch at Fazenda do Ribeirão Dourado. Macuco’s culinary scene also includes rustic settings, manor houses and the ruins of old buildings, which are considered venues for local gastronomy.

Eco-friendly excursions and rural tourism

Macuco offers a cultural and rural tourism route that extends from former coffee farms to ecotourism. The Atlantic Forest reserves offer opportunities for eco-friendly excursions. Trails there can be explored on foot, on horseback or by bicycle. Local farms open their gates to visitors, who can observe and take part in the daily lives of local families engaged in agriculture and livestock farming. This offers a choice between nature experiences and insights into life in the countryside.
