Historic routes and places to visit
Ladeira de Pedra was built by enslaved people toward the end of the 19th century. Historically, it connected the seat of the municipal government with the square where Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Carmo stands. Since 2021, Ladeira de Pedra has been recognized as municipal historic heritage in Carmo. The church was built in 1876 and listed as a protected landmark by Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional in 1964. Praça Getúlio Vargas is in the town center and is also part of Carmo’s tourist route.
Another highlight is Parque Natural Municipal do Livramento, which offers opportunities for ecotourism and is part of the tourist route. Visitors can see the manor house and an exhibition inside. The park therefore combines a connection with nature with a visit to the building and exhibition, while Praça and Ladeira add a historic touch to the town center.
Culture, products and landscapes in the municipality of Carmo
At Fazenda da Quinta, the estate and the recipe for its spirit date back to the 19th century. The residence no longer exists; a wall and a few other structures remain, maintained by the current owners. Cachaça da Quinta has been produced in the municipality of Carmo by the same family since 1923. Tours of the facilities are reserved for companies or organizations that make an inquiry in advance and arrange an appointment. Appointments depend on availability and are intended for groups of up to 15 people. Before making plans, confirm whether an appointment is currently available.
At Estação in the district of Bacelar, products under the Relógio brand are sold, including cheese, requeijão and butter. The brand has a history spanning more than a hundred years. The selection also includes natural and organic products such as green banana flour, honey, goiabada, propolis and homemade biscuits. Folia de Reis is also part of the municipality of Carmo’s cultural calendar. Construction of Capela de Nossa Senhora das Dores in the district of Porto Velho do Cunha was scheduled to begin on May 13, 1849.
Near the district of Porto Velho do Cunha, along RJ-158, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, sport fishing, motorboat trips, river swimming and camping are listed as recreational activities. Check in advance which activities are available at the time of your visit. Cachoeira da Prata is located on Fazenda São Lourenço, is formed by the waters of Rio dos Quilombos, and lies on the border between Carmo and Cantagalo.

In the wider Carmo destination, you can walk along the ecological trails of Pedra da Lua and observe fauna and vegetation typical of the Atlantic Forest. Trilha Pedreira da Prata is in the district of Córrego da Prata and offers views of the state of Minas Gerais, Rio Paraíba do Sul and towns in the region. The two destinations appeal to different interests: nature observation on the trails of Pedra da Lua and scenic views from Trilha Pedreira da Prata.
Access to Mirante da Boa Ideia is 2 kilometers from the town center in the wider Carmo destination, and the visit should be made with the support of guides. Check in advance how a guide can currently be arranged. Ilha dos Pombos, on Rio Paraíba do Sul, is designated as an area of ecological and recreational interest.
