More than 80 waterfalls with crystal-clear water give Cachoeiras De Macacu a strong connection to nature. At the same time, there is more to explore than waterfalls: a trail in the Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu (REGUA) has a clear time frame, different landscape features take center stage in the parks, and other attractions combine nature with local culture. So when making your selection, it helps to decide what you want to focus on – exercise, water and views, or a cultural connection.

Hiking and enjoying the water

The Alagados/Trilha Amarela loop trail at REGUA is 2.8 kilometers long, easy and circular. The loop takes about one to two hours. Visitors can use it during the day; guests of the Pousada have access around the clock. This time frame makes it easy to plan the trail as a separate activity.

REGUA’s protected areas have restrooms, drinking water, parking, marked trails and guided tours. Day visits and guided or self-guided hikes can be requested. Confirm availability directly with the Reserva and check practical visitor information before your trip.

Lagoa Azul in Santa FĂ© is known for its particularly clear water and is considered a place for diving. Here, the focus is on the water, while the REGUA loop trail has a clear time frame for hiking. Water conditions at Lagoa Azul may vary.

Parks with different features

Parque da Cidade appeals to families, couples, older people and children looking for fun and a connection with nature. It also offers one of the finest views of the Rio Macacu. Parque das Águas do Macacu offers a different experience: small rivers and streams surround it, and dense vegetation characterizes the area. Trails run through the surrounding area; the park also includes an old manor house. Check visiting options in advance.

When choosing between the parks, you can use these differences as a guide: at Parque da Cidade, the focus is on connecting with nature and views of the Rio Macacu; at Parque das Águas do Macacu, it is on waterways, vegetation, trails and the manor house.

Culture and local traditions

The Memorial dos Escravos is located in the basement of the Centro Cultural Casarão de Japuíba – Sara Nascimento Azeredo. This place offers a different focus from waterfalls and trails, adding a connection to local history to the range of options.

The Engenho de Farinha do CuĂca is a destination for experiencing local food culture: traditional cassava flour is made there from cassava harvested directly from local farmland. Its connection to regional farming and production sets it apart from the landscape experiences.

IlĂȘ AxĂ© Omin offers guided visits to waterfalls and rivers and into the forest. Members of the religious community explain the significance of these natural landscapes in CandomblĂ©. This makes the experience different from the REGUA loop trail: alongside nature, its significance in CandomblĂ© is also part of the visit. Arrange your visit with IlĂȘ AxĂ© Omin in advance.
