Sertânia lies on the banks of the Moxotó River. Two distinct approaches are central to planning a trip: the city’s history, which can be traced through a church and buildings that have served different purposes, and cultural events ranging from music to theater. When choosing Sertânia, you can first decide whether architectural history, regional handicrafts, or a particular festival date is the deciding factor. These points of interest complement each other, but call for different kinds of planning: a festival visit depends on the specific edition, while the city’s history offers a thematic way to explore the destination.

Church, City History, and Handicrafts

The Matriz da Conceição connects the present-day church with its predecessor: the original chapel was rebuilt in 1922 by Father Leão Verseri in the eclectic style and became today’s Matriz. Another landmark in the city’s history is the former residence of Sertânia’s founders. It once served as the municipal council chamber and now houses Acordes – Associação Cultural de Sertânia.

Unlike the former residence, which now houses Acordes, the old railway station is used as Armazém das Artes, where artisans from the region exhibit their work. The change from municipal use to a cultural association, and from railway station to exhibition space, shows two different ways older buildings have become part of Sertânia’s cultural life today.

Festivals and Performances Throughout the Year

The Festa de Emancipação Política has been celebrated in Sertânia for decades on May 24. It includes music shows and sports competitions, and a gathering of bands and fanfare groups takes place on the eve of the festival. Another date on the calendar is the play Paixão do Sertão: for more than 20 years, it has told the story of Jesus Christ in Sertânia each April, from Genesis to the Resurrection. The formats are quite different—one is a festival program featuring music and sports, the other a play with a biblical narrative arc.

São João de Sertânia features Quadrilha performances at Praça de Eventos Olavo Siqueira, as well as in neighborhoods and communities. Official registration was required to take part in São João 2025. For a later edition, check the participation requirements in effect at that time. From 2021 to 2024, São João de Todos included an Arraial at Praça de Eventos Olavo Siqueira, as well as music shows featuring local and regional artists.

Sertânia’s Carnival features performances by prominent musicians and the Orquestra de Frevos Marajoara; the lineups vary from year to year. The Semana Estudantil de Artes, Cultura, Empreendedorismo featured training programs for young people, entrepreneurs, and aspiring entrepreneurs in its calendars from 2021 to 2024. It also included a food and handicrafts fair that creates business opportunities. The cultural program thus includes handicrafts and food alongside music and theater.

Choosing When to Travel

If you want to travel for a particular festival or performance, check the date and program for the relevant edition in advance. When looking for a vacation rental or other accommodation in Sertânia, your preferred dates can be a useful first point of reference. If you are not traveling for a specific festival, you can use the city’s architectural history, cultural association, and regional handicrafts as themes for your trip.
