Serra Talhada can be explored through a range of themes: protected nature, the history of Cangaço and Xaxado as cultural heritage. When planning a trip, you can weigh these options and decide whether landscapes and outdoor activities or museums and cultural history should shape your stay.
Nature Conservation and Trails
Parque Estadual Mata da Pimenteira is a state-protected natural area in the municipality of Serra Talhada in Pernambuco. It was established by State Decree No. 37.823 of January 30, 2012, and belongs to the strict protection category. The park has hiking trails, rock faces for rappelling and opportunities for climbing. This puts a variety of nature activities at the heart of a visit, without requiring them to be combined into a single tour.
Another specific route in the Serra Talhada destination is Trilha dos Umbuzeiros. It is 1.1 km long and includes Rancho dos Cangaceiros, a replica of a Cangaceiro camp. The route’s length gives a clear sense of its scale; Parque Estadual Mata da Pimenteira, by contrast, offers a broader range of hiking trails and activities on the rocks.
Cangaço History in Museums and Cultural Sites
Museu do Cangaço is located at Estação do Forró, in a building that was part of the city’s former railway station. It is also a Ponto de Cultura Cabras de Lampião and a study and research center on Cangaço. The museum’s topics include objects and photographs of Lampião and his band, numerous references to Maria Bonita, and documentation about Cangaço. The former railway station connects the museum site with the building’s railway history.
The city museum in Serra Talhada’s Casa da Cultura is a separate institution. It presents a large part of the municipality’s history, as well as the stories of figures such as Lampião. The collection ranges from the former Villa Bella to the present day and includes religious items, biographies and numerous photographs of the city from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Those looking to explore Cangaço further can also consider these museum exhibits in relation to Rota Cangaço e Lampião, which is one of Serra Talhada’s main tourist attractions.
Xaxado: Origins and Cultural Heritage
Xaxado is intangible cultural heritage of Serra Talhada. According to historians, the dance was first performed in the early 20th century on the banks of the Pajeú in the municipality of Serra Talhada. The municipality’s recognition of it as intangible cultural heritage dates back to a law passed in 2014. Its historical origin story and later cultural recognition thus stand alongside one another.
The Encontro Nordestino de Xaxado also provided a platform for this tradition: the program for the 2019 edition featured Xaxado performances, a workshop, and a book and handicraft fair. These event details refer to that edition and do not describe a current program.
Handicrafts and Other Cultural Perspectives
The collection at Parque das Esculturas de Ferro includes works by sculptor and poet Ronaldo Aureliano. He made them from reused railway tracks and other discarded railway items. Railway materials thus become the starting point for art in public spaces. Casa do Artesão de Serra Talhada brings together work by hundreds of local artisans. These include products made from wood, ceramics, biscuit, stone and leather, as well as embroidery and crochet.
The amphitheater at Concha Acústica is a venue for theater and music performances. Along with the museums, handicrafts and Xaxado, it offers a cultural perspective distinct from the protected area’s nature theme. The contrast between the main themes is clear: Parque Estadual Mata da Pimenteira and Trilha dos Umbuzeiros represent nature and trails; the museum, Rota Cangaço e Lampião and Xaxado represent history and culture.
