The Trilha dos Umbuzeiros is 1.1 km long and includes the Rancho dos Cangaceiros, a replica of a Cangaceiro camp. The Trilha dos Mirantes is 1.4 km long and leads to two viewpoints overlooking a well-preserved Caatinga landscape. The two routes have different focal points: one centers on the camp replica, while the other focuses on views of the Caatinga.
Caatinga, protected area and trails
The Parque Estadual Mata da Pimenteira is a state conservation unit in the Município de Serra Talhada and belongs to the full protection category. It was established by State Decree No. 37,823 of January 30, 2012. The protected area includes hiking trails, rock faces for rappelling and opportunities for climbing.
The connection between Cangaço history and the landscape is also tangible in Serra Talhada: The 2022 tourism guide training program “Nas Pegadas de Lampião” used Sítio Passagem das Pedras, Casa Grande da Fazenda Pedreira and the rocks where the first armed clash between the Ferreira family and Zé Saturnino took place as outdoor training locations.
Cangaço history and collections
The Museu do Cangaço is both a Ponto de Cultura Cabras de Lampião and a study and research center dedicated to Cangaço. Its collection includes objects and photographs of Lampião and his band, numerous references to Maria Bonita, and documentation about Cangaço.
The Casa da Cultura’s collection spans the period from the former Villa Bella to the present day. It includes religious objects and biographies, as well as numerous photographs of the city from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The two institutions have different areas of focus: the museum is dedicated to Cangaço and its figures, while the Casa da Cultura focuses on the city’s history and photographs.
Art, performance and regional culture
The Parque das Esculturas de Ferro features works by sculptor and poet Ronaldo Aureliano. They were made from reused railway tracks and other discarded railway items. Alongside Cangaço history, the reuse of railway materials thus emerges as an artistic theme.
The Casa do Artesão de Serra Talhada brings together works by hundreds of local artisans. These include products made from wood, ceramics, biscuit, stone and leather, as well as embroidery and crochet. Parosi offers regional artworks created using, among other techniques, mosaic, pyrography, wood carving, sculpture, and oil and textile painting. While the Casa do Artesão emphasizes the variety of materials and works, Parosi highlights specific artistic techniques.
The Concha Acústica amphitheater serves as a venue for theater and music performances. The 2019 Encontro Nordestino de Xaxado featured cultural performances, a Xaxado workshop, and a book and handicrafts fair.
