São João combines nature and culture, appealing to a range of travel interests. At Cachoeira dos Carvalhos, you can bathe under a waterfall shower; a natural pool forms above the waterfall. The Açude Público is used as a recreation area by São João. Cultural attractions include the Casa da Cultura, local festival events and the processing of cassava flour.

Water spots: waterfall and recreation area

Cachoeira dos Carvalhos combines two distinct features for a stay by the water. You can bathe under a waterfall shower; a natural pool forms above the waterfall. This lets you decide whether to include the waterfall, the pool or both in your travel plans. Water conditions may vary by season; check local conditions before making a firm plan to visit.

The Açude Público offers something different: it is used as a recreation area by São João. While Cachoeira dos Carvalhos combines a waterfall and a natural pool, the Açude offers another option as a recreation area. Check local conditions before either visit; seasonal water conditions are particularly important at Cachoeira.

Culture and festival events

The Casa da Cultura de São João opened in June and was open to the public for visits. It also supports artists from São João.

Carnival 2026 lasted two days. Its main stage was located at Praça Municipal de Eventos; traditional Carnival groups were also part of the program.

A June festival parade titled “No Compasso da Cultura, a Educação Faz a Festa” went through the streets of São João. It brought together students, teachers, staff, families and the entire community.

The XIII Concurso de Quadrilhas Juninas in São João featured colorful, impressive Quadrilha performances. As travel attractions, these examples represent different formats: Carnival with a main stage and groups, a parade through the streets, and Quadrilha performances in a competition.

Cassava processing and travel planning

The Casa de Farinha do Gambelo adds cassava processing to the nature and culture attractions: cassava flour was produced there using partially mechanized techniques. Permission had to be obtained locally to visit. If you would like to include the Casa in your travel plans, check in advance whether visits are possible and what the current production status is. Partially mechanized means that machines handled only some of the steps involved in making the flour.

If an event is the deciding factor, check the dates against your travel plans before booking.
