Gravatá combines city history, cultural sites and railway heritage with a river park project and excursions in the surrounding area. You can focus your stay on historic sites and local offerings, or add destinations nearby. One particularly distinctive building was first used as a public jail and later became the Casa da Cultura and the Memorial. A railway trail with 14 tunnels and nearby waterfalls offer further points of interest.

City History and Cultural Sites

The building that houses the Memorial de Gravatá was constructed in 1911 and served as a public jail until the end of the 1970s. It was designated protected historical heritage in 1983; in 1985 it became the Casa da Cultura, and in 2002 the Memorial de Gravatá. Its protected status therefore predates its conversion into the Casa da Cultura.

The Museu Memorial de Gravatá is located at Rua Cleto Campelo, No. 108, in the city center. It presents an extensive archive and the historical memory of the city of Gravatá. Alongside the changing uses of a historic building, the city’s history is also a central focus of a museum with an archive.

The Cruz do Cruzeiro is an emblematic monument and an identity-defining symbol of Alto do Cruzeiro in Gravatá. The viewpoint at Alto do Cruzeiro is considered a gathering place for socializing, taking in the views and tourist visits. The Estação do Artesão de Gravatá is a tourist and cultural site where visitors can buy handicrafts and gifts. The Feira Livre de Gravatá offers fruit, vegetables, legumes, grains and a variety of spices. The local offerings therefore have distinct focuses: handicrafts and gifts alongside a market selling food and spices.

Railway Heritage and Excursions

The railway section between Recife and Gravatá is listed as protected state heritage. The Ponte Cascavel is 50 meters high and is used for rappelling; it is located at the end of a railway trail that passes through 14 tunnels.

A travel guide published in January 2024 highlighted visits to Alto do Caboclo as important excursions offered by local providers in the area around Gravatá.

River, Trees and Waterfalls

Parque Janelas para o Rio aims to reconnect the population with the Ipojuca. The river crosses the municipality of Gravatá from west to east. Six hundred native trees were planted for the park, while existing trees were preserved. Both the connection to the river and the tree cover are among the project’s described features.

A route of about 500 meters for walks is planned. Before visiting, check whether the route has been completed and is accessible.

A travel guide published in January 2024 mentions the Rota das Cachoeiras, which includes Cachoeira das Palmeiras, Cachoeira do Tio and Cachoeira Paraíso Perdido. The three waterfalls are less than 20 kilometers from the city center. The landscape described includes waterfalls, springs and natural pools for swimming. It is advisable to check current accessibility before visiting.
