Barreiros offers a variety of starting points for a trip: in the main town, you’ll find the Igreja de São Miguel, Praça Estácio Coimbra and a stretch of the Rio Una; at the municipal level, mangrove and coastal landscapes add to the picture. The town’s attractions range from church architecture and square design to estuary and sandbar. This allows you to focus your visit on either architectural history or natural landscapes.

Church and Squares in the Main Town

The Igreja de São Miguel in Barreiros was built in 1849. It has two bell towers topped with pyramidal roofs; all openings are pointed arches. The towers create two distinct focal points, while the pointed-arch motif is repeated across all the openings. The church faces a square lined with an avenue of royal palms and shrubs.

The approach to the Igreja Matriz at Praça Estácio Coimbra features a sloping area with several flights of steps. Lawns, shrubs and royal palms line the paths; a bust of Estácio Coimbra stands on the second level. Both the changes in elevation and the planting, as well as the bust, shape the appearance of this square.

River, Estuary and Coastal Landscape

The Rio Una runs through several parts of Barreiros, including a stretch of the main town. The APA Estuarina do Rio Carro Quebrado is also located within the municipality of Barreiros; it covers 402 hectares. It includes a flooded plain continuously covered in mangroves and surrounded by the forests of Mata da Gia and Pedra do Conde.

Also within the municipality, the lower estuary of the Rio Carro Quebrado forms a sandbar about 3 km long, known as Praia de Mamucabinhas, which extends to Ponta de Ilhetas. This offers contrasting natural landscapes: the flooded mangrove plain with its surrounding forests, and the long sandbar with its named endpoint.

Activities and Routes in the Municipality

The 2021 public-use plan provides for walks in the mangrove area at Praia de Mamucabinhas, as well as a river crossing in the Ilhetas/Mamucabas estuary complex. For Ilha do Coqueiro Solitário, the same plan describes a single 6 km stretch of unpaved road; a 500 m footpath then leads to the island, for which a boat trip is indicated. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, check in advance whether they are currently feasible.

Chapel and the Municipality’s Cultural Profile

The Capela de Nossa Senhora do Rosário is also located in the municipality of Barreiros. It was built in 1944 in fulfillment of a vow and is situated in the center of Praça do Rosário. The chapel has a simple design; its roof overhangs are its most distinctive architectural feature. Several flower beds lie in front of and behind the chapel, and houses surround the square. A Maria-Fumaça locomotive stands in the central flower bed.

Architecturally, the two churches make different impressions: the Igreja de São Miguel has two bell towers topped with pyramidal roofs and pointed-arch openings; the simple Capela do Rosário stands out especially for its roof overhangs. The cultural profile of the municipality of Barreiros also includes Pastoril as a folk tradition and woodworking as a typical craft for decorative and practical use.
