Arcoverde combines cultural history and handicrafts with hiking trails in the municipality. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first whether you mainly want to explore the city’s museums and historic sites or also set aside time for trails in the surrounding landscape. The tours differ not only in length but also in their described features.

Getting to Arcoverde and finding your way around

The BR-232 runs through Arcoverde, including its urban area. The bus station is on Avenida José Bonifácio in the São Cristóvão neighborhood. When looking for a hotel, you can use your planned focus as a starting point: the city’s cultural sites and handicrafts, or the hiking trails in the municipality.

Cultural history and Samba de Coco

The Museu do Boi de Pernambuco preserves the interconnected histories of Pernambuco’s Bumba-meu-boi groups, masters, and cultural practitioners in a shared collection. The Museu do Boi de Arcoverde also preserves records and props from the city’s Carnival Bois and documents the stories of their masters and participants. Arcoverde thus highlights both local traditions and a broader cultural context.

Buildings and cultural venues also offer different historical points of reference. The Igrejinha Batista was inaugurated in 1926, has been preserved, and serves as an annex to the new Baptist temple. The Igreja Nossa Senhora do Livramento traces its origins to a chapel built in 1841, around which the settlement that became today’s Arcoverde grew. LICBOIS operates in a Galpão at the Estação da Cultura, the former railway station dating from 1912. The station is therefore both a historic site and a workplace for a cultural organization.

The traditional wooden shoes used for the Trupé in Samba de Coco performances are made at the Ateliê Mestre Assis Calixto. The Rota dos Cocos aims to make Samba de Coco accessible throughout the year through open rehearsals, festivals, celebrations, and visits to the groups’ headquarters. Coco Pisada Segura holds rehearsals on Tuesdays and Thursdays; confirm the dates before your trip. The Memorial Frei Damião preserves a collection of documents about his life and holds a pilgrimage every year on May 31, with prayers, marching band performances, and fireworks. Check event dates in advance if you are planning your trip around this date.

Market, cuisine, and handicrafts

CECORA in central Arcoverde opened in 1986 and hosts the city’s traditional fair. Parts of the original structure of the former SANBRA complex remain there. The Centro de Gastronomia e Artesanato de Arcoverde offers another way to explore local products: you’ll find regional cuisine, handicrafts, and handmade goods there. The food area also has a stage for artistic and cultural performances.

The Casa do Artesão is also located in the city center. It showcases local handicrafts and sells items made from straw, biscuit, fabric, crochet, and wood, among other materials. CECORA and Casa do Artesão therefore offer different experiences: one focuses on the traditional fair and preserved architecture, while the other showcases and sells handicrafts. This can help you shape your visit according to your interest in market history or handmade goods.

Hiking trails and landscapes in the municipality

The Trilha da Caiçara is an easy, approximately 5 km out-and-back hike. It starts at Alto Cruzeiro and leads to the foot of Serra do Jacaré. The Trilha do Lajedão runs along Estrada do Deserto in the rural northwest of the municipality of Arcoverde: this easy, 7 km out-and-back hike includes a rocky outcrop and a view of the sunset. In the mountain area known as Caiçara, on the edge of the BR-232, Serra do Jacaré is a rocky outcrop whose flora is predominantly native to the Caatinga biome.

Another option is the Trilha da Serra da Coruja in western Arcoverde. This approximately 9 km out-and-back hike includes a short climbing section and an average elevation gain of 600 meters; along the way, it offers expansive views of the area around the Serra. The routes can be distinguished by their described features: the Caiçara route is approximately 5 km long and rated easy; the Lajedão route includes a rocky outcrop and sunset views, while the Coruja hike combines a climbing section with expansive views. The Santuário da Divina Misericórdia also has hiking trails in the rural southeast of the municipality.
