A deck overlooking the Iguaçu River, a Neo-Gothic church and two different markets give São Mateus do Sul clear starting points for planning a trip. The town combines a river theme with Polish-influenced history and food-related offerings. Plan your stay around what interests you most: nature watching and outdoor activities, cultural history or regional products.

By the Iguaçu River: Nature Watching and Outdoor Activities

Praça do Rio Iguaçu is a place for recreation and nature watching. Its deck is above the river; there is also a playground and a cycling path. This brings different activities together in one place: nature watching from the deck, playing and cycling. In São Mateus do Sul, the Iguaçu River is also associated with boat trips, making it another point of interest for a river-themed stay.

The Chimarródromo is located on the square, where the Roda de Mathe takes place on the first Sunday of every month. If you want to plan your visit around the event, check the calendar before your trip. The regular monthly schedule helps you choose a date, while checking in advance makes it easier to coordinate your visit with the Sunday you want.

Polish-Influenced History and Culture

The Igreja Matriz de São Mateus do Sul is an architectural landmark in the Neo-Gothic style. Polish immigrants built the church in the early 20th century. Its architecture and history are closely connected: the Neo-Gothic building is a distinctive feature of the church, while its construction history highlights Polish immigration.

The Casa da Memória Padre Bauer preserves the history and culture of São Mateus do Sul. It offers another way to explore the town’s history alongside the church. If you are especially interested in Polish immigration, the Mês Polonês is also relevant: the event is one of the town’s major cultural occasions.

The 32nd edition of the Mês Polonês took place in 2026, from July 18 to August 30. Its program presented the history of Polish immigration through religion, music, dance, gastronomy, art and community celebrations. If you would like to experience a future edition during a later stay, check the announced dates.

Markets and Food Offerings

On Rua do Mathe, the Feira Gastronômica offers typical dishes, homemade sweets and drinks, along with live music. The listed hours are Wednesdays and Fridays from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Check the date before your visit if you want to include these offerings in your day’s plans.

The Feira do Produtor is also located on Rua do Mathe. Its offerings are different: they include fruit, vegetables, cheese, cured meats, erva-mate and colonial products directly from the countryside. This gives you a choice of two different market visits. The Feira Gastronômica focuses on dishes, sweets, drinks and music; the Feira do Produtor focuses on products directly from the countryside. You can decide based on your interests whether food and music or the products on offer matter more to you during your visit.
