A sandstone outcrop in São Luiz do Purunã preserves traces of living things from a time when the area was shaped by a shallow sea, about 400 million years ago. This geological heritage sits alongside experiences centered on the landscape, horses, wine, and regional cuisine. You can tailor your stay to different interests rather than reducing the town to a single theme.
Fossils from a shallow sea
The Sítio dos Icnofósseis Devonianos de São Luiz do Purunã displays traces and impressions of ancient invertebrates from the Early Devonian. The sandstone belongs to the Formação Furnas; the preserved traces bring the landscape’s history to life. The geological site was listed as a heritage site by the state of Paraná on June 13, 2012. Its value is scientific, educational, and cultural.
For orientation: the geological site is on the edge of the BR-277/376 highway in the direction of Curitiba–Ponta Grossa, about 500 meters before the toll plaza. This information can help you identify its location as you travel. Visitors especially interested in Earth’s history will find a clear focus here; activities in the surrounding area offer a different emphasis.
Protected area and outdoor activities
The São Luiz do Purunã district lies entirely within the Área de Proteção Ambiental da Escarpa Devoniana. The protected area is located on Paraná’s Second Plateau and protects 70 percent of the municipality’s area. In the Serra de São Luiz do Purunã, the APA offers several climbing sectors; specialized companies from Curitiba and Campo Largo serve this segment.
Horseback riding is also on offer: Cavalgadas Purunã leads rides along its own trails through the region’s natural landscape. At Sto Antônio Centro Equestre, the focus is on encounters with horses, basic horsemanship, and an insight into the rhythms of rural life. Cabanha Esperança combines its Horse Start—an introduction to the world of riding based on trust and respect for the animals—with horseback rides. Archery and horseback archery are also offered there.
If you prefer to get around on wheels, Vale do Purunã offers guided quad bike rides on nature trails. For a more peaceful break, Studio PurunaYoga regularly offers yoga, meditation, and sound healing in a natural setting on Sundays at 11 a.m. At Cachoeira do Bruel, there are opportunities to swim, as well as natural pools in the Tamanduá River. The waterfall is part of the landscape on the grounds of Pousada Cristal do Horizonte.
Wine, berries, and regional cuisine
At Unus Mundus, a vineyard tour takes visitors through 18 wine grape varieties and explains agroforestry methods and the winemaking process. It includes a look inside the winery, at the tanks and barrels, and in the cellar. The visit ends with a tasting of two house wines, accompanied by cold cuts and other appetizers. As reservation arrangements may change, check the latest details before planning your visit.
At Entre Frutas, you can pick fresh blueberries straight from the bush and learn more about how they are grown. Chácara Kiwi da Serra serves lunch and a colonial-style breakfast. Tables are set outdoors or in a covered area, surrounded by a kiwi orchard and the district’s natural landscape. Café Tropeiro’s colonial-style breakfast features tropeiro-inspired dishes, characteristic flavors, and traditional recipes.
Menina do Campo Bistrô offers a traditional country lunch as an all-you-can-eat buffet on Saturdays and Sundays. Once a month, traditional costela—beef ribs cooked over an open fire—is also served. Check the latest dates for these offerings, as well as for yoga, before planning your visit around them.
The area’s place on the Rota dos Tropeiros
The history of the tropeiros also shapes the area’s tourism identity. Recently established in the state of Paraná, the Rota dos Tropeiros includes 16 municipalities, among them Balsa Nova and the São Luiz do Purunã district. The route thus connects cultural history with a contemporary visit that can range, depending on your interests, from geological traces to outdoor activities, food, and wine.
