You can plan a visit to Ortigueira around its attractions on two scales: in the town center, with its church and landmark, and across the municipality, with its cycling route and waterfalls. One specific point of reference is Lago Municipal: the Ciclorrota Caminho da Cachoeira do Barroso starts here, and the Estátua do Cristo Redentor stands at the far end of the lake. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish these places in town from the broader natural attractions.

Church and Lago Municipal

The Igreja Matriz de Ortigueira is in the town center, at the end of the main street. It is also known as Paróquia São Sebastião and is considered an important religious and architectural landmark. This gives the town center a clearly identified cultural attraction alongside the leisure and recreational opportunities at Lago Municipal.

Lago Municipal has a playground and paths for walking and cycling. The Estátua do Cristo Redentor is at the far end of the lake. The church and the lake therefore offer different ways to spend time: a religious and architectural landmark in one place, a playground and waterside paths in the other. A 2024 on-site assessment described Lago Municipal as designed to be accessible to people with reduced mobility; however, it is not a current accessibility assessment. Check current conditions before your visit if you rely on specific accessibility features.

Cycling in the municipality

The Ciclorrota Caminho da Cachoeira do Barroso starts at Lago Municipal and is a 33.61-kilometer cycling route in the Município Ortigueira. The paths around the lake for walking and cycling are separate: they are local amenities at the lake, while the stated distance refers to the cycling route in the municipality. This makes it easier to think of time at the lake separately from planning a longer route.

Along the Ciclorrota, the rural areas of Lajeado Bonito and Espigão do Tigre feature fields and native forests, including remnants of the Mata de Araucária. The locality of Colônia Augusta Vitória is also on the route. Its culture and settlement pattern are strongly influenced by German colonization. The cycling tour therefore passes through natural and cultural landscapes that extend beyond the town center into the municipality of Ortigueira.

Waterfalls and rocky landscapes

Cachoeira Dito Gardiano is 16 kilometers from the city. It consists of three waterfalls on the Rio Barra Grande; the area is suitable for swimming. Check current conditions before swimming. Cachoeira Rio Bonito offers a different kind of landscape: water flows over several rocks and forms a medium-sized pool that appears to be deep. The description of the pool does not indicate that it is suitable for swimming.

Cachoeira Véu da Noiva is in rural Ortigueira, around 27 kilometers from the town center. Two waterfalls reach a combined height of about 150 meters. Serra Pelada de Ortigueira, 18 kilometers from the town center, is a series of rocky mountains. Its name refers to the bare rock faces. The natural attractions described here are therefore quite distinct: Dito Gardiano is noted for swimming, Rio Bonito for the pool among the rocks, Véu da Noiva for the height of its waterfalls, and Serra Pelada for its series of rocky mountains.

Cachoeira do Barroso is also in the wider municipality of Ortigueira. It lies in a rural landscape with native forest and small farms and is a natural attraction along the Ciclorrota Caminho da Cachoeira do Barroso. When weighing up these destinations for your trip, you can consider the town center, Lago Municipal and the landscapes across the municipality as distinct options rather than combining them into a single outing.
