A city park with trails, a cultural festival traditionally held in September, and landscapes featuring canyons and waterfalls shape Jaguariaíva. Regional Cuisine, Festivals and a Pilgrimage Site
A municipal report on cultural activities dated May 13, 2024, describes Quirerada as Jaguariaíva’s official typical dish. It gives local cuisine a tangible place alongside the trip’s nature and cultural destinations.
The report also describes the “Partes de Nossa História” cultural festival: traditionally held in September to celebrate Jaguariaíva’s anniversary, it has presented Tropeirismo since 2011. If you want to time your trip to coincide with the festival, check the date for the year you plan to visit. The Feira da Lua in the municipality features small producers, entrepreneurs and cultural performances. As with this recurring event, dates and programs may change.
Another cultural site is Capela Santo Antônio de Pádua in the Pesqueiro neighborhood. Built in 1957, the chapel is a pilgrimage site visited by people from across the region. Visits are not possible, so it is not suitable for an interior visit as part of your travel itinerary.
Nature in the Urban Area
Parque Ambiental Dr. Ruy Cunha is a reserve with Atlantic Forest vegetation. It is located in the urban area on the Rio Jaguariaíva. This sets it apart geographically from the state parks in the municipality and offers a place to enjoy nature in the urban area.
The park has trails, a reception area, a mini-museum with taxidermied animals and restrooms. The trails can be used on foot or by bicycle. As individual facilities may change, check the current status before your visit.
Canyons and Waterfalls in the Municipality
At Parque Estadual do Vale do Codó in the municipality of Jaguariaíva, the Rio Lajeado Grande and the Rio Jaguariaíva form valleys with steep walls. The park’s valleys contain outcrops of Furnas sandstone. The Cânion do Rio Lajeado Grande in the park area is approximately 450 meters long and has an elevation difference of about 50 meters. An elevation difference of approximately 50 meters is also given for Cachoeira do Véu da Noiva in the park area.
Access to the area of Parque Estadual do Vale do Codó in the municipality of Jaguariaíva is via PR-151. From Ponta Grossa toward Sengés, you can turn onto an unpaved side road near the urban area of Jaguariaíva at kilometer 211.
Parque Estadual do Cerrado is located in the municipalities of Jaguariaíva and Sengés, 12 kilometers from the municipal seat of Jaguariaíva. The park in the municipalities of Jaguariaíva and Sengés preserves remnants of Cerrado ecosystems, canyons and waterfalls. In the area near Jaguariaíva, there is an opportunity to view the Rio Jaguariaíva canyon from a lookout point in Parque Estadual do Cerrado. Trails in the park near Jaguariaíva lead to Cachoeira do Ribeirão São Antônio, rapids and small waterfalls, as well as a 40-meter-high waterfall.
From the center of Jaguariaíva, the route to Parque Estadual do Cerrado, located in the municipalities of Jaguariaíva and Sengés, heads toward Cidade Alta and the Copel substation in the Samambaia neighborhood. From the unpaved road, it is 11 kilometers to Parque Estadual do Cerrado in the area near Jaguariaíva. The state parks are destinations in the municipality or the area near Jaguariaíva; they also differ in their main features: Vale do Codó is known for its steep river valleys and sandstone outcrops, while Cerrado is known for its trails, lookout point and waterfalls.
