In São Geraldo do Araguaia, river landscapes meet traces of the past. The Serra das Andorinhas/Martírios State Park is located in the municipality; the Araguaia Environmental Protection Area (APA Araguaia) lies entirely within its boundaries. Its landscape includes archaeological sites, caves, caverns, rock art, hiking trails and waterfalls. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the different seasonal offerings and cultural themes.
River Landscapes and Remarkable Nature
In the Serra das Andorinhas, landscapes of the Amazon and Cerrado biomes come together. More than 300 species of mammals, birds, reptiles and fish have been catalogued there; many are endemic or endangered. The waterfalls also have a distinctive geological setting: springs flow down the mountainside towards the Araguaia River. Their clear, mineral-rich water draws visitors for a swim.
The Pedra Escrita rock inscription and Ilha dos Martírios can be reached by way of the Araguaia River within the APA Araguaia. The stone inscriptions on Ilha dos Martírios are estimated to be approximately 8,000 years old. Those interested in archaeological sites and landscapes can also explore their history on the Quelônios Route, which takes in sites, caves, beaches, caverns, rock art, hiking trails and waterfalls.
Named natural attractions also include Cachoeira das Três Quedas and Praia da Gaivota. Cachoeira das Três Quedas comprises several pools and waterfalls with crystal-clear water. It is 28 kilometres from the town, on the boundary between the São Geraldo do Araguaia APA and the Serra das Andorinhas State Park. Praia da Gaivota is on the banks of the Araguaia River, less than six kilometres from the town centre. It is suitable for relaxing and swimming, and can be reached by land or water.
Seasonal Activities by the Water
In summer, seasonal beaches form along the Araguaia River within the APA Araguaia; Remanso dos Botos is one example. During the July holiday season, the freshwater beaches of Ilha de Campo offer opportunities for camping, swimming in the river and sport fishing. Camping along the Araguaia River during the dry season, from June to August, is a separate option. These time periods answer different planning needs: if you have specific beach or camping activities in mind, consider the relevant season when planning your trip.
Nature activities also vary in focus. Sítio Bela Vista offers nature hikes, a camping area and birdwatching; honey from stingless bees is also produced there. Camping da Sapucaia is on the banks of the Araguaia River and is geared towards tranquillity and close contact with nature. The Serra waterfalls, birdwatching and the riverbanks each offer a different experience, rather than forming a single, uniform itinerary.
Culture, Festivals and Local Cuisine
The Festejo do Divino Espírito Santo is an annual, nine-day religious celebration at Casa de Pedra in the Serra das Andorinhas. It ends with a pilgrimage in honour of the Divino Espírito Santo. The Festival do Arroz was first conceived and held in Vila Novo Paraíso in 1994. It takes place every September and is considered an important cultural celebration for the municipality; if you are planning your trip around the festival, it is a good idea to check the dates in advance.
The XX Festival do Cari is considered part of the municipality's cultural heritage. Associated culinary traditions include stalls run by the river community at the Feira do Peixe in the Beira Rio neighbourhood, serving Caldeirada de Cari and cakes and pastries filled with Cari. The Casa do Artesão at Sítio Bom Sossego showcases local crafts, where clay souvenirs are made. Religious traditions, festivals and local products can thus be appreciated as distinct aspects of the cultural offering.
Accommodation and Trip Planning
Sítio Remanso dos Botos has a camping area, overnight rooms and bathrooms; its restaurant is open on weekends. If you would like to stay there, check current availability. Together with the camping options along the Araguaia River, this provides practical guidance for matching your preferred type of accommodation with your planned nature and river activities.
There is also one thing to note about getting there: São Geraldo do Araguaia does not have its own commercial airport. Whether you want to focus on seasonal river activities, archaeological sites, nature watching or cultural themes may determine the order in which you plan your trip.
