Maracanã brings together historic churches, the Rio Maracanã and an active festival calendar. Two questions are especially helpful for planning: Which dates would you like to experience, and are you interested in the town center itself or also the municipality?

Churches with a History of Their Own

The Igreja de São Miguel Arcanjo was first built in the 17th century; its last reconstruction was completed in 1890. Today, the square of the same name and a cultural center are located at its site. The Igreja de São Benedito was first built from stone and lime mortar in the 18th century and served as the parish church of Maracanã in the late 19th century.

The two histories have different emphases: for São Miguel, both its early origins and the reconstruction completed in 1890, as well as today's square and cultural center, are defining features. For São Benedito, its building materials and former role as a parish church provide the historical context. Those interested in architectural history will find two different ways into the history of the place.

The River and Getting Your Bearings

The Rio Maracanã runs by the town center of Maracanã. You can reach it on foot, by road or by river. As access conditions can change, it is advisable to check the current situation before visiting.

The Regata de Nossa Senhora de Nazaré takes place on the Rio Maracanã every year: the competition, featuring sailboats and rowing boats, is held the day after the religious program of the Círio. If you plan to travel for the regatta, check the date and program before making plans, as both should be verified against current information.

The Igarapé do Apeteua in the Aliança neighborhood, near the center of Maracanã, offers another point of reference. It is about 2 kilometers, or 10 minutes, from the PA-127. The time estimate is approximate; actual travel times may vary.

December Traditions and Music

The Festividade de São Benedito is a religious and cultural tradition that has been alive in Maracanã for more than a century. It includes novenas, processions and performances by Carimbó groups. The festival takes place every December, from December 24 to 28; the annual program may change. Check the dates and program details before planning a trip around it. This gives you two different calendar reference points: the Festividade's fixed December dates and the date of the Regata following the religious Círio program.

Music education is also part of the town's cultural life. The Escola de Música Eládio Almeida offers lessons in wind instruments such as saxophone, trombone and clarinet to students at the school and to students from the municipality's schools. The current course offerings may change.

A Look at the Municipality

The Área de Proteção Ambiental de Algodoal-Maiandeua is located within the municipality. Established in 1990, the protected area is intended for sustainable use and includes the islands of Algodoal and Maiandeua. It broadens the view of Maracanã beyond the town center to include a protected area and its islands.

The Rio Escuro is also part of the municipality. In a statement dated November 4, 2025, the municipality described it as one of the most traditional and popular places in the area and said it was being revitalized again as a tourist attraction and place for recreation.

When to Travel and Find a Hotel

If a festival is the reason for your trip, check the current dates before deciding when to travel and choosing hotels for your stay. If you don't have a specific event date in mind, the historic churches can be the focus of your visit; the Rio Maracanã offers another point of reference for planning.
