Capitão Poço can be explored through two distinct themes: the town’s history and the bathing and excursion destinations in the rural municipality. In town, churches, a historic street, and woodcarving point to local history and craftsmanship. Rivers, balneários, and leisure facilities appeal to other interests. For your planning, it is worth distinguishing between these geographic areas and checking current access and offerings before excursions.

Local history and craftsmanship

Avenida 29 de Dezembro, a section of the PA-124, is where the original settlement of eight houses and a small church was established. The first Catholic church in Capitão Poço was built of clay in 1948 and covered with wooden shingles; its patron saint was Santo Antonio Maria Zacarias. Santo Antônio Church is one of Capitão Poço’s most significant historic buildings. Together, the street and churches provide concrete points of reference for learning about the town’s origins and historic heritage.

Another cultural reference is the carving of wooden figures, highlighted as an important local craft. It complements the history of church architecture with a perspective on craftsmanship. Those interested in the town’s cultural identity can therefore explore local crafts as well as historic buildings.

Festivals and cultural traditions

The Círio de Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro is celebrated on the first Sunday in December. Since this date is mentioned in an older municipal history, check the current program for your travel year. In 2025, thousands of people filled the streets for the 44th edition of the Círio de Nossa Senhora Mãe do Perpétuo Socorro. This dated celebration gives an impression of the event’s significance, but does not set a date for future years.

The municipal planning framework for 2026–2029 also highlights the Festival da Pimenta as an important festival that attracts visitors and celebrates the community’s identity. If you are traveling for this event, base your plans on a confirmed date.

In the municipality, in a Tembé-Tenetehara settlement, the Wyra’whaw takes place, also known as the Festa da Moça. The Tembé ritual is held in the Ramada meeting house and lasts about seven days. In 2018, the second half of the year was considered the usual time for the ritual; confirm the date locally before making plans. Its location in the municipality is important: the ritual is not located in the town of Capitão Poço.

Rivers and bathing destinations in the municipality

In 2018, the Rio Guamá and other rivers in the municipality could be used for swimming and boat trips. Balneário Geladeira is on the Igarapé Caranandeua, in the rural area near the destination. It is described as having fresh, cold, crystal-clear water and preserved vegetation; Geladeira is also highlighted as a tourist hub in the municipality. As natural conditions and access may have changed, check them before setting out.

Near Vila Cacuri, the Igarapé Açu is described as having fresh, cold, crystal-clear water. The area was freely used by local residents and the surrounding communities; here too, check current conditions and use in advance. Vila de Igarapé-Açu is highlighted as a bathing tourism hub in the municipality. These places therefore differ from a visit focused on local history and craftsmanship.

In 2018, Parque Clube Riacho Doce was one of the important leisure facilities in the rural municipality. As a leisure and events complex, it had artificial and natural swimming pools, a bar, and a restaurant. Check its current operations and offerings before including it in your plans.

Balneário Farias, on the Igarapé Capitão Poço, was listed as having a bar and a restaurant serving, among other things, tilapia and tambaqui raised on site. This is a specific indication of what is offered at this location, not of a general local culinary tradition. Praia da Boca Nova is a recreational area on the banks of the Rio Guamá; bars and kiosks are located near Vila Boca Nova in the rural municipality. Current confirmation of these facilities and access is also recommended.

Plan excursions based on each location’s geography and confirm dates, access, and offerings before setting your itinerary.
