A nature visit to Canaã dos Carajás can have many different focuses: Parque Natural Municipal Veredas de Carajás offers hiking and ecological activities, while the cultural center and markets appeal to other interests. There are also protected areas that span several municipalities. When planning your trip, it is therefore important to distinguish between municipal nature destinations, regional protected areas and the visitor arrangements for Floresta Nacional.

Nature at Parque Veredas and Bosque Gonzaguinha

Parque Natural Municipal Veredas de Carajás covers 842 hectares and is a municipal reserve. It contains the Barragem do Verde, an important water reservoir for the municipality’s water supply, vegetation from the Amazon region, and documented wildlife including primates and felines. The park thus combines its role in supplying water with an ecological focus. It offers opportunities for hiking and ecological activities. These give a visit different emphases: physical activity and exploring the natural environment.

Bosque Gonzaguinha, also known as “Matinha,” is an ecological area with native vegetation and local wildlife. It is open to visitors and for physical activities; check current access conditions before your visit.

Culture and regional cuisine

Casa da Cultura de Canaã dos Carajás opened in 2004. Its facilities include exhibition spaces, an auditorium, music and ballet rooms, workshop spaces, and a reading room with more than 5,000 literary works. There is also an outdoor area for events. This means exhibitions and events sit alongside music, ballet, workshops and literature as different cultural interests. The center complements the nature program with its own cultural focus.

Feira do Produtor and Mercado Municipal Clarindo Moraes da Silva connect local producers with fresh or handcrafted products, regional home-style dishes and other local goods. Here, an interest in regional cuisine can be combined with exploring the variety of local products. Individual vendors and the layout may change, so do not plan around a particular stall.

Protected areas spanning several municipalities

Parque Nacional dos Campos Ferruginosos is a federally protected area with full protection status in the municipalities of Parauapebas and Canaã dos Carajás. Its purpose is to preserve a significant part of the Amazonian Canga ecosystem. Floresta Nacional de Carajás spans Parauapebas, Canaã dos Carajás and Água Azul do Norte. It offers opportunities for birdwatching, and one of its main attractions is canoeing on rivers within the protected area.

All visits inside Floresta Nacional are organized through Cooperativa de Ecoturismo de Carajás (COOPERTURE). The cooperative is authorized by ICMBio to guide visitors in the protected area. Check the arrangements for visiting before your trip. The destinations therefore also differ in how they can be visited: the municipal Parque Veredas offers hiking and ecological activities, while birdwatching and canoeing in Floresta Nacional are linked to organized guided visits. Parque Nacional dos Campos Ferruginosos focuses on protecting the Canga ecosystem.
