Viçosa can be explored through a range of themes: the Casa Arthur Bernardes is known for its eclectic architecture and state heritage protection; Mata do Paraíso and Mata da Biologia draw attention to the Mata Atlântica. There are also zoological and botanical collections at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa. When planning your stay, it is worth deciding first whether cultural history, landscapes or natural history will be your main focus.
Architecture, heritage protection and collections
The Casa Arthur Bernardes was built between 1922 and 1926 in the eclectic style. Its state heritage protection was approved by Decree No. 29.399 of April 21, 1989. It is listed in Heritage Register II for fine arts and Heritage Register III for historic monuments, historic works of art, and palaeographic or bibliographic documents. Its construction period and style give the house a distinct place in Viçosa’s architectural history; its listing in two heritage registers also shows the different aspects of heritage covered.
The Museu de Zoologia João Moojen offers a natural history counterpart. It was founded in 1933 from a collection of various animals from Brazilian fauna assembled by João Moojen, then a professor. Today, the collection comprises more than 22,000 specimens, including reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals and fossils. Some are on public display, including prepared and taxidermied animals from Brazilian fauna. The museum thus combines its founding history with a collection that includes several animal groups as well as fossils.
The Museu da Comunicação is a memory and experimentation center of the Department of Communication and Journalism on the Universidade Federal de Viçosa campus. Visits are offered. If you plan to visit, check the current visiting conditions in advance.
Forest areas and botanical themes
Mata do Paraíso is a Mata Atlântica reserve with a forest fragment of about 400 ha; the station covers 200 ha of it. The area is in excellent condition and is home to numerous endangered animal and plant species. It also protects the springs of Córrego Santa Catarina, an important tributary of Ribeirão São Bartolomeu. The area also has trails and an environmental education center. Its size, biodiversity and protection of springs make ecological connections an essential part of its natural history theme.
Mata da Biologia, also known as Recanto das Cigarras, is a protected area on the Universidade Federal de Viçosa campus. It is a species-rich, naturally regenerating fragment of the Mata Atlântica. The trails can be used for interpretive activities about ecology, plants, animals and fungi. The Horto Botânico of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa offers a different botanical focus: its collection includes living native and introduced plants.
The nature attractions are not interchangeable: at Mata do Paraíso, the forest area, springs and environmental education are central to its stated focus; Mata da Biologia combines a protected forest fragment with themed activities along the trails. The Horto Botânico focuses on living plants. These differences can help you choose specifically between landscape conservation, ecological themes and botanical collections, rather than planning all the nature destinations as the same experience.
Planning visits
Visiting hours for the Casa Arthur Bernardes are listed as Tuesday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Check the hours before you travel. For the museums, distinguish between their respective themes: the Museu de Zoologia João Moojen has part of its collection on public display, while the current visiting conditions for the Museu da Comunicação should be checked in advance. This lets you make your choice based on what is offered and take the specific visiting hours into account.
