Serro offers travelers several specific points of interest: churches from different periods, a museum with images of Catholic art, and the Salão do Queijo with a variety of cheeses. You can tailor your stay to your interests—for example, architectural history, sacred art, or local cheeses. There are also several ways to get there; which one is right for you depends on your starting point.

Getting There and Planning Your Trip

Depending on your starting point, you can reach Serro by car, bus, or plane. So plan your journey around where you are starting from, rather than assuming that one mode of transport will suit every trip. Check the specific connection and timetable before setting off. When looking for a hotel in Serro, you can first consider which themes you would like to focus on: church architecture, the museum’s collection, or the cheese selection. This way, planning starts with your interests and the travel option that suits you.

Churches, Architectural History, and City Views

The Igreja de Santa Rita dates back to the 18th century. Its long staircase offers panoramic views of Serro’s streets, mansions, and other churches. This brings the visible cityscape into focus alongside the building itself: the view takes in various features of the city, not just a single church.

Today’s Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora da Conceição is considered one of the largest religious buildings in Brazilian colonial architecture. The history of the first Matriz of Vila do Príncipe provides a specific early date: it was built in 1713 under the patronage of Santo Antônio. The Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo adds two more dates to the architectural history. Its construction began in 1768 and was completed in 1781. Dates help place these building histories in time; the Igreja do Senhor Bom Jesus de Matozinhos, by contrast, is particularly characterized by its artistic design.

The Igreja do Senhor Bom Jesus de Matozinhos features paintings and carved lines in the Rococo style. While the dates for the Igreja do Carmo describe the course of its construction, the Rococo reference draws attention to its design. The Festa do Rosário is also part of Serro’s cultural identity. It is also called the Festa de Nossa Senhora dos Homens Pretos do Serro and is listed as Serro’s intangible cultural heritage under Municipal Decree No. 5.837/2016 of November 25, 2016. If you would like to plan your trip around the Festa, check the event date before booking.

Collection and Cheese Selection

The Museu Regional Casa dos Ottoni is located in Serro in an 18th-century building and was founded in 1949. It mainly preserves images of Catholic art. These include images carried in the Procissão de Cinzas, as well as images from the demolished church of Nossa Senhora da Purificação. This gives the museum a distinct focus alongside the church buildings: its emphasis is on artworks and their stated contexts.

The Salão do Queijo in the center of Serro offers a different kind of local discovery. It sells Frescal, aged, smooth-rind, bloomy-rind, and artisan cheeses. The selection thus ranges from Frescal and aged cheese to varieties described by their rind, as well as artisan cheese. The specific selection may change; check it before planning a visit.

Plan your journey to suit your starting point as well.
