Cultural history, the Marolo tradition and the landscape offer different ways to explore Paraguaçu in southern Minas Gerais. The Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora do Carmo and the Museu Municipal Alferes Belisário provide specific historical points of reference. The Festa do Marolo brings together a range of themes; the Serra da Matinada offers a view of the surrounding landscape.

Church and Museum: Two Historical Perspectives

The Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora do Carmo was inaugurated on January 1, 1916. At the time, the parish was led by Padre Antônio Piccinini. The date and the parish leadership at the time provide two distinct historical points of reference: one marks the church’s inauguration, while the other identifies the church leadership of that period. This connects the history of the building with a specific period in the parish’s history.

The Museu Municipal Alferes Belisário adds a biographical perspective. It honors Belisário Rodrigues da Cunha, who was from the municipality of Paraguaçu and distinguished himself in the Paraguayan War. His origins and historical role give the museum a different focus from the church, with its inauguration date and parish leadership at the time. Museum visits are possible occasionally rather than regularly. If you plan a visit, check in advance whether one is possible.

The Marolo Tradition and the Festa do Marolo

The Festa do Marolo takes place every March in the municipality of Paraguaçu. As a gastronomic, educational, sporting, musical and cultural event, it encompasses more than just a culinary occasion. Check the specific dates for the year before traveling; the program may change.

The methods used to make Marolo sweets and Marolo liqueur are listed as intangible cultural heritage of Paraguaçu. Sweets and liqueur are sold during the Festa; vendors and sales arrangements may vary. Two aspects therefore coexist: the production methods, which are permanently listed, and the sales associated with the event.

The program for the Festa do Marolo, scheduled for March 11–15, 2026, included a visit to a Marolo field via the Rota do Marolo on March 14 at 2 p.m. Free transportation was due to depart from Praça Oswaldo Costa. The field visit was therefore a specific item on that edition’s program.

The Serra da Matinada and Views of the Surrounding Area

The Serra da Matinada is 3 kilometers from the urban area of Paraguaçu. Its summit is 900 meters above sea level and offers views of several neighboring municipalities. This landscape perspective complements the historical and culinary themes with a view beyond Paraguaçu.

The places and themes offer different points of emphasis: the church and museum represent local and personal history, while the Festa is an annual event held in March with a program that changes from year to year. The Serra da Matinada is defined by its elevation and views of neighboring municipalities. You can choose which of these perspectives to focus on during your trip based on your interests.
