The Matriz de SĂŁo Francisco de Paula, Virado de Frango and the waterfalls of Cachoeira do TabuĂŁo show three different sides of Ouro Fino. For your planning, it is worth distinguishing the town itself from the rural districts of the municipality: the church, museum and monument are in the town, while the Caminho da Prece passes through rural areas of the municipality. This can help you decide whether sacred art, local food culture or nature experiences should shape your stay.

Sacred Art and a Pilgrimage Destination

The Igreja Matriz de São Francisco de Paula is one of the main attractions on Ouro Fino’s tourist route. On May 13, 2007, the Matriz was elevated to the status of Santuário São Francisco de Paula e N. S. de Fátima. Pilgrims and other visitors come to the sanctuary to pray before images of São Francisco de Paula or Our Lady. This makes the site both a place of religious prayer and an established stop on the tourist route.

The church also houses the Museu de Arte Sacra, the only museum of sacred art in southern Minas Gerais. If you are interested in the collection, you can plan a visit as a separate focus alongside prayer at the sanctuary; check access in advance. The same church thus offers two distinct visitor experiences: the sanctuary as a place of prayer and the museum’s sacred art.

A Monument with Definite Dimensions

The Menino da Porteira adds a concrete monument to the town’s cultural attractions. The sculpture is ten meters high, weighs ten tons and is 16 meters long. Its height, weight and length convey its scale from three different perspectives. The monument can therefore be considered a cultural attraction in its own right, alongside the sacred sites at the Matriz.

Virado de Frango: Local Heritage

Ouro Fino also has a specifically named culinary attraction: Virado de Frango is a traditional dish from Ouro Fino and is recognized as intangible cultural heritage of the municipality in the state of Minas Gerais. It is prepared with free-range chicken and cornmeal from a stone mortar. Its local recognition and named ingredients make it a distinct culinary point of interest, not merely a general reference to regional cuisine. If you would like to try the dish, ask about its availability during your stay.

Waterfalls and Trails in the Municipality

Cachoeira do TabuĂŁo is located in Bairro do TabuĂŁo, in the district of CrisĂłlia, and comprises several cascades over a distance of about 900 meters. This approximate length and succession of cascades make the waterfall a distinct nature attraction alongside the cultural sites in town.

Hiking trails, horseback rides and excursions are among the ecotourism options in the municipality. The landscape features waterfalls, rivers and Pedra do Itaguaçú. One specific hiking option is the Caminho da Prece: the pilgrimage route is 71 kilometers long and passes through rural districts of the municipality of Ouro Fino, not through the town itself. It is considered a moderate, short-duration hiking option for weekends. So if you are considering this route, plan for a rural experience within the municipality rather than a hiking trail through the town.
