There are several distinct reasons to visit Ouro Branco: nature trails and a waterfall, rural architecture and historic churches, and the annual Potato Festival. First decide whether nature, architectural and church history, or the festival dates will shape your stay. This gives your planning a clear focus, rather than treating all the themes as a single route.

Hiking Trails and Waterfall

One nature destination in the municipality of Ouro Branco is Parque Estadual Serra do Ouro Branco. It has self-guided hiking trails and long-distance routes, including Trilha da Canela de Ema, Circuito das Águas and Travessia Topo da Serra / Itatiaia. The park has no visitor facilities. Booking a visit in advance is recommended; contact the park administration beforehand and confirm the current conditions.

Cachoeira de Itatiaia is in the district of Itatiaia, within the municipality of Ouro Branco. It is 70 meters high and has natural pools suitable for swimming. The waterfall is easier to reach from above via a trail that begins at the edge of Estrada Real. Follow the guidance for day visits; a local guide is recommended. Confirm the current conditions locally before planning your visit.

Rural Architecture and Church History

Another focus is the rural heritage. Fazenda Carreiras, also known as Casa de Tiradentes, is in the municipality of Ouro Branco, on the edge of the former Estrada Real. It has been a protected heritage site under Iepha since September 2000. An example of 18th-century rural architecture in Minas Gerais, it preserves the simplicity of the building style of the time.

Matriz de Santo Antônio in Ouro Branco has its own historical date: its first mention appears in a marriage certificate from 1717. Igreja de Santo Antônio in Itatiaia has an altarpiece with carvings by Lourenço Rodrigues de Souza dating from 1792 and 1793. The historical references differ: Fazenda is primarily about rural architecture, Matriz about its early written mention, and the church in Itatiaia about its dated altarpiece.

Potato Festival

The Potato Festival takes place every year in Ouro Branco during the first half of October. Check the specific event dates before your trip. It originated during the potato boom of the 1980s, when potatoes were plentiful. These are two different time references for planning: the first half of October is the recurring festival period, while the 1980s are the historical background to its origins.

When looking for a hotel in Ouro Branco, it is worth deciding on the purpose of your visit first: for the festival, check the specific dates; for the park, booking in advance and checking with the administration are recommended.
