Mirantão combines waterfall destinations with mountain views and individual buildings in the colonial architectural style. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between the different points of reference: Some features belong to a destination in the district, while others describe the access road, a view from a hillside or a festival scheduled for a specific time. This lets you weigh nature, townscape and culture according to your interests.
Waterfall destinations in the district
Vale do Alcantilado, also called Sítio das Cachoeiras do Alcantilado, is located on Estrada Mauá-Mirantão in the Mirantão district and comprises nine waterfalls. Sítio Cachoeiras do Alcantilado is located on Estrada Mauá-Mirantão at kilometer 10 in Bocaina de Minas. Poço da Areia and Mirante da Candeia are also destinations in the Mirantão district. Vale is therefore a named waterfall destination; the other two names add further destinations in the district to the selection.
At Cachoeira da Prata, there is an option to use a hiking trail. The site also has a large parking area and a restaurant. Before your visit, check whether the parking area and restaurant will be available on your chosen date. Compared with Vale do Alcantilado, the possible hiking trail and the amenities mentioned here offer different highlights from the number of waterfalls. When choosing, you can consider which of these specific features is more important to your trip planning.
Views and access
The access road to Mirantão is unpaved; from there, you can see Pico do Itatiaia, which is over 2,700 meters high. Pedra Selada, by contrast, is visible in the distance from Mirantão. These are two different viewing points: Pico do Itatiaia is associated with the access road, while Pedra Selada is seen from a distance from Mirantão. The unpaved road is also a specific point to take into account when planning your journey.
Church and townscape
The Church of Bom Jesus dos Pobres stands on a hillside in Mirantão. From the church, part of the town’s houses can be seen from above. This view of the houses differs from the distant mountain views: here, the hillside location and a glimpse of the townscape go together. Some buildings in Mirantão retain a colonial architectural style. This gives culture-minded travelers several architectural points of interest: the church as a named place and colonial-style features on some buildings. The information about the architectural style applies to some buildings, not to the entire town.
Traditional Festa de Mirantão
The traditional Festa de Mirantão was scheduled for July 17 to 19, 2026, in the Mirantão district of Bocaina de Minas. Cultural activities, music and performances related to local traditions were planned for this edition. The program was intended for residents, families and visitors. The date and program refer to the 2026 edition and provide a specific time reference for Mirantão’s cultural life.
