Mariana can be explored through several thematic perspectives. The Museu de Mariana explores the city in many dimensions; the Museu Casa Alphonsus de Guimaraens is connected with a poet and his former home. Itacolomi State Park complements these cultural themes with protected landscapes and hiking trails. For planning your trip, this offers distinct areas of focus: local history, literature, and nature.
Urban History and Literature in Two Museums
The Museu de Mariana presents, interprets, and communicates the city’s cultural, social, historical, geographical, geological, and political-religious characteristics. Mariana is therefore at the center in several dimensions, unlike a house museum with a single biographical focus. The exhibition content may change. The museum is located in the Casa do Conde de Assumar, which formerly housed the city’s first bishop’s palace. This former function adds the history of the building to the museum’s subject matter.
The Museu Casa Alphonsus de Guimaraens opened in 1987 in the house where the poet lived with his family, including his wife and children, from 1913 to 1921. These dates mark different milestones: 1913 to 1921 was the poet’s period of residence, while 1987 was the year the museum opened. This makes it possible to distinguish the timeline of his life from that of the museum.
The permanent exhibition is titled “Alphonsus de Guimaraens, Poeta do Luar” and opened in June 2018. The collection includes the writer’s personal belongings, personal photographs, his private library and written documents, as well as items from his work as a judge. These different materials bring together personal and literary connections with a glimpse into his professional life.
Landscape and Hiking Trails in Itacolomi State Park
Itacolomi State Park adds a distinct landscape perspective to the range of themes. It covers 5,971 hectares and protects remnants of the Atlantic Rainforest as well as high-altitude grasslands. The park has well-maintained hiking trails with signs in Portuguese. Alongside the protected ecosystems, the trails are therefore a concrete part of the park experience.
The geographical scope also distinguishes these themes: the two museums relate to Mariana, while Itacolomi State Park extends between Mariana and Ouro Preto. This allows you to consider the city’s cultural themes and the park’s landscape as distinct regional areas of focus. For your selection, this means that urban history, a poet’s life and collection, and protected landscapes each offer a different way to explore Mariana and its surroundings.
