Capitólio: Experiences by Focus

The things to do in Capitólio can be divided into different areas of focus: water, views, activity and culture. On a boat trip departing from the harbor on the Rio Turvo, visitors can travel into the Canyons de Furnas and swim in the reservoir. The canyons are accessible by motorboat and can be explored from within. Those who choose to focus on the water can combine a canyon trip with swimming—a different kind of activity from taking in the view from a lookout point.

At Mirante dos Canyons, there is a suspension bridge and a viewing platform above the canyon. Zip lines over the canyon and rappelling down its quartzite walls are also offered. The site therefore offers both viewpoints and other activities: you can focus on the view across the canyon or choose one of the activities on offer.

In Parque Ecoturístico Trilha do Sol, hiking trails lead to three main waterfalls: Cachoeira Poço Dourado, Cachoeira do Grito and Cachoeira No Limite. Birdwatching is also possible in the park. The trails therefore lead to specific waterfalls, while birdwatching offers a different focus on nature.

In Capitólio, Rota do Grotão is part of the municipal rural tourism program Raízes do Campo. Visiting its attractions requires prior arrangements. So don’t plan this visit at the last minute; check the specific arrangements in advance.

Cultural and culinary points of interest are also identified. Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião is part of the historical and cultural heritage of the municipality of Capitólio. Restaurante do Turvo is located at Rodovia MG-050, km 306; the road address provides a specific reference point for planning a meal. Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião is also listed as an attraction in Capitólio’s municipal tourism offering. Capitólio is also part of Circuito Turístico Nascentes das Gerais. In addition to Capitólio, the circuit includes the municipalities of Carmo do Rio Claro, Cássia, Delfinópolis, Guapé, Ibiraci, Itaú de Minas, Passos, Pratápolis and São João Batista do Glória. The circuit therefore comprises ten municipalities in total.

Parque Nacional da Serra da Canastra is another geographical point of reference for the landscape. According to Decree No. 70.355 of April 3, 1972, part of the municipality of Capitólio lies within the national park’s estimated area of 200,000 hectares. This statement refers to part of the municipality, not its entire area.
