Guarda-Mor offers several themes to shape a trip around: nature destinations within the municipality, the Festa de Santa Rita de Cássia, and historical connections ranging from religious devotion to the monitoring of gold transportation. The Santuário de Santa Rita de Cássia is in the town center; many nature and history themes, however, relate to the municipality as a whole. You can tailor your choices to whether you are most interested in waterfalls, cultural traditions, or a possible pilgrimage route.

Waterfalls and Nature Destinations

Cachoeira do Funil is one of Guarda-Mor’s most important natural attractions. A hiking trail connects the Funil 1, Funil 2, and Funil 3 waterfalls in a loop at Cachoeira do Funil. The named falls and their connection by a trail give this natural destination a different focus from Cachoeira da Fumaça, where the water drops along a stretch of approximately 80 meters, surrounded by rock walls.

Cachoeira da Usina is also part of the municipality’s natural and cultural heritage. The Guarda-Mor municipal administration placed it under protection because of its importance for natural history. Its scenic beauty and cultural significance also make it a tourist attraction, with opportunities to learn and explore. The waterfalls therefore each have a different emphasis: the connected trail at Funil, Fumaça’s approximate drop and rocky setting, and the connection between nature and culture at Usina.

Cachoeira do Funil 4 has a practical distinction: you can drive almost all the way there. Conditions may vary by season, so check them before setting out.

Santa Rita and Cultural Traditions

The Festa de Santa Rita de Cássia takes place every year in the municipality of Guarda-Mor and is closely tied to its culture, memory, and everyday religious practices. Customs passed down through generations and community work shape the festival; it is registered as intangible cultural heritage of Guarda-Mor. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the specific festival dates for your chosen year.

The IEPHA register of entries included in the 2023 cultural heritage survey also includes Modo de Fazer Rapadura da Fazenda SĂŁo Francisco and Modo de Fiar e de Tecer de Guarda-Mor, both registered as intangible cultural practices. Their names refer to making rapadura, as well as spinning and weaving. Folias de Minas is another cultural tradition associated with Guarda-Mor. Together, these themes show different aspects of cultural heritage: a recurring festival, community work passed down through generations, and craft practices.

History and Route Planning

The history of devotion to Saint Rita dates back to the 19th century. It led to the construction of a chapel, from which the parish of Santa Rita dos ImpossĂveis de Guarda-Mor emerged. A different historical connection is a Guarda-Real post established to monitor gold transported to Uberaba. These two stories are clearly distinct: one concerns the formation of a religious community, the other the monitoring of gold transportation.

Long-distance routes are also part of the travel picture, but their status should be checked before making specific plans. On April 29, 2022, the Via Liberdade tourist route, which includes Guarda-Mor, was unveiled. The announcement listed a length of 1,179 kilometers and named Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Goiás, and the Federal District as connected areas. Check the current route status and visitor arrangements before traveling.

A new section of the Caminho de Nossa Senhora da Lapa was announced for the second half of 2026. It is intended to reach the Santuário de Santa Rita de Cássia in the town center; the route is expected to be 50 kilometers long in total. Before making specific hiking plans, check whether the section is now operational.

The Santuário is in the town center, while the waterfalls should be considered destinations within the municipality. If Cachoeira do Funil 4 is part of your plans, also factor the seasonally variable driving conditions into your arrangements.
